I don't think re-burial takes place wherever you see tombstones re-arranged around the perimeter of the burial ground. It's more often a case that the persons responsible for the upkeep of the space consider it will be easier to cut the grass and be more usable as an open space if the tombstones are moved.

This is not the correct position, a"faculty" is required for re-ordering a churchyard. Re-ordering includes moving headstones, kerbs, railings etc. Part of the "Faculty" procedure includes Public Notice and may include notice being given to next of kin for particular graves. In other words, if they consider it easier to cut the grass they are required to give adequate notice and take all reasonable steps to inform the next of kin prior to taking such action. Such notice must be given for a minimum of 2 months and for two consecutive weeks in the local paper. The church must ensure that photographs are taken, inscriptions recorded and a sketch plan of the site layout. The District Council must be provided with this information. It is an offence to remove or disturb human remains, so a necessary Order is needed before this can be done.

Yes, yes, yes, I fully concur.....its just that I chose to skip lightly o'er the surface, without "digging down" too much... biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
In comparison to wringing a Faculty out of the C of E, gaining Planning Permission or Listed Building Consent is mere childsplay!

But it nevertheless is still true that where a church has done a deal - with say the local council to maintain the space, they will try to "cut corners" by seeking to "re-order" the space, sweeping away the layers of time, that is what so upsets me.

It is the same everywhere in today's environment: the High Street, pubs ...and now signal boxes. lmfao.gif

October's Modern Railways has a short piece on reburying the dead who had to be exhumed to build the Borough Market viaduct.

Unfortunately, it isn't just today. Where I used to live, the local Council demolished in 1923, an Elizabethan wooden courthouse, with a jail, stocks, a school house and market built in 1567-8. Curiously an ex pub that was listed but unused mysteriously caught fire and had to be demolished.

Hopefully, there's a few more enlightened people about to at least make some sort of protest. Need to get out with the camera to, at least record, the signal boxes remaining.

Of course, most "official vandalism" came about after the war, and the 1960s in particular.

"What Hitler didn't get, the Council finished off" being the type of saying!

Chester's Lost Market, the "Newgate", The concrete multi story car park right by the side of the Walls, next to the "Newgate".

St Michael's Way, the inner ring road that marches across the area from the Northgate Roundabout with its Fountain (!) and right through the walls.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg as regards Chester.

I won't start on Coventry, Birmingham, etc. ! ohmy.gif

I think it was either Frame or Upnick who posted this pic. with no captions, awhile back. ?

It was me. I spotted it whilst having breakfast at Lower Almondsbury Garden Centre in south gloucester.

Cheers,Frame.
