Just a couple of snaps of the building work. I'll take another of the inside, once the flooring is in. Currently because of the white walls and ceiling I don't think it will make a good photo.
Just prior to the commencement of building works I added a shed. This houses a sturdy work bench and most of the power tools. I have a room in the house for my modelling, this also has a good bench and excellent lighting. My Table saw a "Triton" will remain in the railway room untill the bench work is complete. This can handle full sheets of ply, or hardboard, as I'm planning to use spline bed for some sections of the layout.
Right now being almost summer we are more concerned with our next sorte` on the canals. We have a narrow boat from Napton for the first week in June, nothing too taxing just a amble down to Stoke Bruerne.

Returning to the layout. I have pondered using a modular design for the bench work. This has the advantage that it can be easily moved should we up root and move again. Our long term plans are probably a move to Spain for winters, and a narrow boat in the Uk for summers - well thats the plan. That won't be happening for a bit - not while we have Rossie our Scottie. This dog has been our rock, he began his journey long before we left South Africa had to endure 6 months of isolation in a crapped kennel. Nothing has broken his spirit.

Well hoping to get down to starting the layout design tomorrow. This will definately incorporate a return loop
as I believe this always improves operational intrest.

You have taken a double garage and added a section. This looks great. You say that you had to get planning permission for this. What did you tell them it was to be used for?

I have a similar space above a double garage that I use for trains and slotcars. When we built the garage and games room, the planning department refused the plans saying that there was no bathroom and toilet. They thought that we were building another house on the property... happy.gif

Good Morning Doug,
the local council objected on the grounds that it could be turned into a flat. In fact every delivery of materials from various suppliers was accompanied by a comment "nice granny flat mate" or similar. Of course when we do move on, we shall sell the house and "Studio" with potential for a granny flat. I think we've added 50K to the value of the house. This building work cost me 16000k and 500k for the electrical and a further 300k for the alarm. OK some of it was done for cash. A loft conversion would have been 24000k minium for less space. We would loose one bedroom for the stair case. So we viewed it as a sound investment. This is my third purpose built railway room, the other two were ontop of the garages. The first being the best with a wet room toilet and seperate workshop area. They have all proved to be a sound investment, although we miss our last house which was 475m2 so we used to a lot of room.
