One of our offspring was posted to Prague for a six month stint so it was inevitable that mother would blag a week's free accommodation during that period. A couple of days were set aside for a trip to Vienna. Prague main station is an impressive affair boasting many platforms and some interesting looking double decker commuter trains such as this one:-

The train to Vienna was made up of Czech railways coaches hauled by an OBB Taurus. The trip takes about four and a half hours which is not particularly fast but the line follows several river valleys on its way to Brno before crossing the border just beyond Brecslav. In the Czech Republic, the train travels on the right hand line and in Austria it's on the left. The service stops at several outlying stations in Vienna, with Wien Miedling being the one with the metro link into the centre.

After a couple of good days sight seeing a night at the Volksopera, a lot cheaper than the State opera, we returned in good time for our return trip of four and a half hours. During the thirty minutes or so of waiting, a wide variety of trains passed through. These are some of them.

The OBB seems to have a very large number of Siemens Taurus locos. This one is on a suburban shuttle service

where the shuttle has been named "Wiesel"

This non Taurus hauled train is heading for Maribor in Slovenia

And this service originated in Warsaw and consists of Polish railways coaches behind an OBB Taurus. The last coach in this train was also OBB stock.

The tail end of a departing Wiesel.

The station also hosts Railjet services. This one was bound for Budapest

And a video of three trains. The first and third capture the characteristic Taurus start up sound. The second was our train to Prague complete with Czech Railways coaches.

That's a magnificent overall roof, David. I love the airiness of the whole structure, and how much light is allowed in, and the spindly nature of the steelwork - so detailed and minimalist. Set out a specification for a multi-platform station in 2011, and you can imagine slab shaped and utilitarian the result would be. You're very lucky to be within a few hours travel of such a variety of railway architecture and systems!

I do realise that. We also went in the opposite direction for a day trip to Dresden but I didn't take any railway related photos. On that occasion the whole train was Czech.

To be honest? No. We were straight off the train and down the stairs heading for the city centre and on the return trip, the train was in the station and we got straight on to find seats without reservations. We'd been "gazumped" on the journey down and didn't want to repeat the journey back in the corridor.

But since you've posed the question, I'll guess that it's Dresden and it does look vaguely familiar. The station roof whilst looking retro, has a modern look about the detail of the implementation.

Yes, that's the terminal (suburban?) tracks at Dresden viewed from the platform for the through tracks, while we were waiting for our ICE to take us to Riesa. We don't have "train sheds" here in Oz, so the lattice work fascinates me!

I see I wasn't alone in having issues with DB's reservations: we were a party of 7, and despite me phoning up from Australia and going through multiple operators before finding one to pay for a booking (the number is too small for a group, but too large for a single reservation), when we landed in Frankfurt, there was only one of the three bookings I paid for processed and on the system to print out... luckily the trip we didn't get was Kolding - Frankfurt, and so we were able to board early on in the trip and get unallocated seats.

We were booked with Czech Railways. The problem was not with making a reservation, rather in not having one. We didn't think we'd need one for the two hour trip to Dresden from Prague - we were wrong on that count. We did have reservations for the trip to Vienna. Whilst they weren't needed on the way out, we were glad of them on the way back. Our train was passing through Brno at about 5pm on the day before Czech national day, so the train rapidly filled with students making their way home for a long weekend break.
