Is there any precedent for the colours used by Dublo on their signal boxes. All the real Southern boxes I've seen are constructed of brick and concrete none with orange or green roofs. Like the Bachmann ones. Although I did find a picture on google of Bognor box which looked as though it had a reddish roof.
Was this just HD's idea to interest young people or to fit in with the similarly coloured platforms? Rather unusual for them as their loco liveries tend to be fairly accurate. Hugh |

Michael Foster's book "Hornby Dublo 1938-1964" has very little on the signal box. He comments that the roof of later boxes was changed from red to green but that not many of the latter were made. There is nothing at all about the possible prototype or the colour scheme used.

I'm not certain that this model box was based on any specific prototype. As far as I can make out from the Foster book, it may have been designed just pre-WW2 but did not get made until well after - around 1952. Judging by the detail Foster can quote regarding the footbridge, for example, it seems Hornby records about the modern signal box do not exist now.
The pre-WW2 Hornby box was a standard rectangular box and made out of wood with printed paper stuck on. John Webb |

My OP referred to the Bognor box roof appearing red.
Here's the picture ![]() (Picture taken by David Long but used under creative commons). Hugh PS just noticed the air conditioning unit on the side of the box not far from the semaphore signal! |

The Dublo box was based ,apparently,on an Eastern Region prototype, the exact location of which escapes me now,but it was somewhere on the G.E. section and in the London area.
I have a couple of these, and one of them I am Americanising-I tried to get the paint off it,even Nitromors would'nt shift it-I eventually got most of it off with my Expo drill and a wire pencil attachment. Steve P.S- I think the original colours were just Hornby's made up to appeal to us young kids in Dan Dare days! |

Looks like the windows have been renewed at some point. Did they not have those "Crittal" type metal window frames originally ? -------------------- Take care & enjoy life.
