The postie cometh knocking at my door this morning bearing gifts! My Heljan Kestrel! Havnt got time to have a proper play with it and take photos this morning but its a very nice model, wieghty and with a fair amount of detail factory fitted. With lots of extra detailing parts to add later. Nice pamplet with information regarding the real real one.
When I get a chance Ill post a proper write up about it. Steve -------------------- Steve

As promised some photos. The model runs well out of the box and handles my 1 in 30 incline with ease.

It's unlikely that anybody has a recording of sufficient quality. It had a new Winterthur built 16LVA24 prime mover that had sixteen cylinders arranged in two V shaped banks delivering 4,000 bhp at 1,100rpm. This was coupled to a Brush alternator/exciter and combined train heat/auxiliary generator. Nothing that powerful had been put in a loco before (or since) so sound might have to be a 'best guess'; but I'd challenge anybody to prove any sound that you can come with as wrong, unless you choose a 2 stroke, or a whistling turbo.

I heard Kestrel go past at speed a fair number of times while it was working ECML passenger. Nothing like a Deltic, complete absence of the beating effects due to the Deltics having two engines , nor the harsh racket from fast running engines and gearboxes. It probably did sound different from the class 47s, but not sufficiently in any way to make it memorably distinctive. Rumble, rumble, whirr as it went past about sums it up.

From some angles the cab of the Kestral reminded me of something - this is what I was thinking of but then it's only really the general shape of the cab. or is it me ?

My model of Kestrel arrived yesterday. It is really very good, the only fault I have is that the brake lining mouldings are nowhere near the wheels !
I am adding a sound decoder to the model. Soundtraxx have one that is an Alco 251 16-cylinder, (low speed rumble) and (no turbo? is that correct) that will do for the moment, later I can edit the horn etc to UK style rather than US. I will either mount a speaker in the tank or 2 speakers, 1 each end on top of the chassis. I will post once it is done. (I replaced the rather pathetic speaker in the Bachmann Deltic with one Bass enhanced speaker in the tank, FAR better sound !) Regards Nick British Modelmaker in South Florida ! |

If you could post a series of how to photos of fitting sound to Kestrel I'd appreciate them as I want to fit sound to mine but have no idea where to start.

No couplings in the box I suppose any from Heljan will fit or Bachmann for that matter.
