Well Jukebox got in his time machine last night... to see Ross Wilson perform a local gig.

Now most of you who reside outside this big brown land will not know of Ross, or his bands Daddy Cool, and Mondo Rock, but he has been an icon of Aussie Music for 41 years.

The last time I saw Mondo Rock was 1984 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre, when they were the support act for Elton John on his Two Low For Zero tour... 28 years ago. ohmy.gif

Even though it was billed as a Ross Wilson solo gig, what made the night for me last night was the presence of one Eric McCusker on guitar. Eric was one of the key songwriters for Mondo rock, and penned a number of tunes that were hits for Mondo Rock in my formative years, including this one:

The gig itself was... okay. A bit too loud for a tiny club room venue (the sound was getting muddy on the peaks), but they ticked most of the boxes for the songs I wanted to hear, just missing "No Time", which was always going to be a long shot. Ross' voice was fine - though he's a few pounds heavier than in the clip above.

Still, any way you carve it up, he is Aussie Rock Royalty. The music he and Eric wrote have given me hours of enjoyment, and I'm glad to have seen them both one more time.

For a short time only on BBC iPlayer a documentary on David Bowie and the story of Ziggy Stardust. I never owned any Bowie LPs but it was fascinating to hear songs and sounds that were so familiar...
