Introduction

There is no substitute for referring to and reading the User's Guide but here are some quick recipes to get you started.

For testing and having a go without messing anything up, use this: Sandbox.

How do I create a Page?

Creating a page - Method 1

  • Go to the Sandbox (The sandbox is a page that can be used for testing. Delete the contents when you are done)
  • Click the edit tab (You need to be logged in)
  • Type the following text into the edit box
My new page name
  • Click the "Show preview" button below the edit box
  • You should now see a preview of your page with "My new page name" displayed as a broken link - that's red on my Firefox Browser.
  • Click on the link and the Editor will create the new page for you.
  • Enter your text
  • When you are finished be sure to press "Save page"

Creating a page - Method 2

  • Enter the page name you wish to create (without any brackets) into the Search box (top right of the page).
  • If the page exists it will show up (blue link), but if it does not (red link), you will be prompted to create it.
  • Click on the red link to create and edit the new page.

Hints for page content

The contents list doesn't make itself. It relies on page creators putting a Category tag on the page. See the article below for how to create category tags and new categories. If someone works out how to enter intra page cross references - please put one here ;)

PS. To create the new page using the sandbox and preview, you created a cross reference. A few square brackets is all it takes.

How do I create Category pages?

The contents tree is created manually by adding special tags to a Wiki page. For example

will add the page to the list of Subcategories below. Similarly adding

will add the page to the Track category

Pages can appear in more than one category. All you have to do is add two category entries

will add the page to both the Track and Wiring category pages. Note that the category text is case sensitive and spaces are important thus

and are not the same!

In an effort to help contributors remember to put pages into a category, it is recommended that the Category tags are placed at the top of page.

How do I add Goolgle Analytics Stats?

This allows us to keep track of visitor statistics. Please add it to the bottom of each new page. Place the following at the bottom of your pages:

<analytics uacct="UA-127667-2" ></analytics>

This is not visible on the page when published.

How do I link a page to the Forum?

You can create a forum discussion link box which can link to an existing discussion topic on Model Rail Forum by using the template Forum-Link or by using the template MRF (the same as Forum-Link but in a shorter form). Simply enter the topic ID (found in the URL of the topic on the Forum):

            Short form:

This results in the following:
