Bachmann Europe PLC released its first ready to run diesel loco fitted with a sound decoder at the Warley National Model Railway Show. The EWS Class 66 loco no. 66022 "Lafarge Charnwood" is the first ready to run loco released by a major British outline manufacturer to be fitted with a sound decoder.

David Haarhaus, the Sales and Marketing Manager of Bachmann Europe PLC said today "we have listened to our customers and following our successful introduction of DCC in 2005, we have been developing a range of DCC sound locomotives. The first of therse to be released in the highly popular Class 66 locomotive with the Class 20, 25/3, 47 and 55 diesels due to follow over the next few months. The Class 20 will be released next".

David continued "the sound fitted locomotives have already generated considerable interest when we have demonstrated them around the country. We expect that the high quality system matched to a very competitive price will result in a large number of railway modelelrs adopting DCC operations. With our next generation DCC system Dynamis due for unveiling in January, we are confident that the switch to DCC will gather momentum very quickly. We will of course continue to support existing analogue systems".

The digital sound used in the model was recorded digitally from a real Class 66 loco and matches the sound activity in every respect. The installation of sound equipment has resulted in this loco being the first British ready to run loco to be supplied with a 21 pin DCC interface.

The loco is now available from dealers with a recommended retail price of £157.70. Sound decoder and speakers are a standard fitment. The loco will operate on analogue (non DCC) systems but the sound will remain silent.

Happy modelling
Gary

Press release arrived today. Dated 2 December 2006. Basically the same as the info already posted above:

First British sound locomotive released

Bachmann Europe PLC has today released its first ready to run diesel locomotive fitted with a sound decoder. The EWS Class 66 locomotive No. 66022 ‘Lafarge Charnwood’ is the first ready to run locomotive released by a major manufacturer to be fitted with a sound decoder.

The sounds reflect the operation of the locomotive and include start up, acceleration, braking, buffer action, coupling, shut down and horn applications. David Haarhaus Sales & Marketing Manager of Bachmann Europe Plc said today “we have listened to our customers and following our successful introduction of DCC in 2005, we have been developing a range of DCC Sound locomotives. The first of these to be released is the highly popular Class 66 locomotive with the Class 20, 25/3, 47 and 55 diesels due to follow over the next few months. The Class 20 will be released next”.

David continued “the sound fitted locomotives have already generated considerable interest when we have demonstrated them around the country. We expect that the high quality system matched to a very competitive price will result in a large number of railway modellers adopting DCC operations. With our next generation DCC system ‘Dynamis’ due for unveiling in January, we are confident that the switch to DCC will gather momentum very quickly. We will of course continue to support existing analogue systems”.

The digital sound used in the model was recorded digitally from a real Class 66 locomotive and matches the sound activity in every respect. The installation of sound equipment has resulted in this locomotive being the first British ready to run locomotive to be supplied with a 21 pin DCC interface.

The Class 66 with authentic digital sound will be available from dealers (Catalogue No. 32-725DS) at a cost of £157.70. A sound decoder and speakers are fitted as standard on this model. The locomotive will also operate on analogue (non DCC) systems but the sound system will remain silent.

Correction ;

The EWS Class 66 locomotive No. 66022 ‘Lafarge Charnwood’ is the first UK outline OO ready to run locomotive released by a major manufacturer to be fitted with a sound decoder.

Does anyone know if the sound decoder is the same one that has been fitted to the Mehano HO 66 for some time & do the horn sounds vary ?

Its SWd that have supplied the sound files for bachman.

The SWd "own brand" 66 chip is far better than the bachmann version for me.
