The set with the diesel shunter in the foreground is R1075 Mixed Goods this has been replaced by R1126 Mixed Fright. This is the set with the steam loco in the foreground.

Both sets have the basic oval and trackpack A which adds a siding. They both have the same amount of wagons just in different liveries and come with the Select controller. The only real difference is the R1126 set has a J83 tank engine instead of the Jinty tank in the older R1075 set, but itís probably the same chassis as the Jinty just a different body, the diesel is.

I brought the R1075 in September last year and was disappointed with the way the Select controller worked and it went back in the box. It came out again the other weekend when my Select controller arrived back from Hornby after a software upgrade. Iím now fairly happy with it and my 5 year old son thinks it great. I now feel a bit more inclined to expand and lay a permanent layout using this as a starting point, which was the whole purpose of it purchase in the first place and thanks to 1djspikey for great idea of a place to put it! If your thinking of buying one ask the shop to power up the select and check which software version itís running V1.2 is the latest and itís made my controller a totally different controller to the one I sent back.

I also must just add thanks Hornby great customer service and very nice to experience these days.

I know Iíve been told itís because itís a basic controller, but before Iíd had those responses, I'd already sent an email to Hornby via their web site complaining. This is what I have just received this morning.

ďUnfortunately, this is the way the SELECT works.. we are aware of the issue and hope to incorporate a "fix" into the next production batch of the unit. However, it is possible to update any SELECT in the factory by the use of a PC etc. I will put you on the waiting list for a free update when it is availableĒ

Hope yet maybe for all us Select users ?

Well thanks guys this digital needs a bit more research before I go into it properly. As I said I brought it as a way back in and as an introduction. Not a promising start I suppose if you find something wrong on your first try, but never mind itíll keep me and my son amused for a while and Iíll try out a few of the suggestions Iíve had as work rounds. Just need to free some space in the garage and get and board now. Got a few old locos I fancy having a go at converting, so if someone could point me in the right direction for some advice on this Iíd be grateful. Thinking of doing an old Hornby Ivatt class 2, King Arther class Sir Dinadan and a Mainline Royal Scot. Only want them to control them under the select not bothered about lights or sound for the time being just want to make use of a few locos Iíve got knocking around.

Correct I did ask the same question on the Hornby site and I did have answers. This does not automatically mean that these answers are right. The opportunity to ask the question of a wider audience and have a few more opinions is one that I shall take. Also having a wider audience to my question is giving me a greater number of work rounds to try out when I next set it up.

I did a lot of looking around for other posts about this problem before I made mine and could not find anything remotely similar and I did start to think I had a problem or was doing something wrong. Now Iíve had a reasonable response and it is becoming apparent that itís because itís cheaper system, does not necessarily mean itís right, surly basic engine control and continuity of speed is something that should be expected of all systems regardless of cost.

Can I ask if anybody has actually challenged Hornby about this or itís just been accepted because itís cheap. Does the Bachmann EZ Command do the same.

Hi, Iím new to the forum and new to digital.

On Saturday I treated myself to a R1075 Mixed Goods digital set. It's a way back into the hobby and a start in digital. That that night as I couldn't wait to try it out and when my 4 year old son had gone to bed, I made a temporary set up, put the track mat on the carpet, laid the track, programmed the locos and got it working. Really impressed and taken back by the ability to run two engines on the same track, double heading etc. Things have moved on since I stopped playing trains some 20+ years ago.

Anyway my problem. I have the Select unit which came with the set and as I'm sure you know this only has one control dial. I have locos 1 & 2 running, I select and stop loco 1 by turning the dial fully anticlockwise. Then I switch back to the running loco 2 but the speed dial is now in the stop position. How do I then control itís speed as soon as I turn the dial which has to be clockwise the loco jolts to a stop if I then continue turning the dial the engine just surges from itís jolted stop up to the speed the dial is then set at.

Iím sure this can't be the way itís suppose to work sad.gif

Please what am I doing wrong. Other than that my little test run was great.

Thanks in anticipation.
