"A Hundred Years of Speed with Safety"

For those with an interest in the prototypes of signals on British railways over the last hundred years or so, this book may be of interest. Much of it was written by O S Nock, the noted railway writer, who also worked for Westinghouse for 45 years, becoming their Chief Mechanical Engineer.

The book was written for the centenary of the company, but was never published, possibly because it was being taken over by the Hawker-Siddeley Group at that time. A small editorial team has worked on the original manuscript left by O S Nock (he died in 1994) and the book was published in 2006 by the Hobnob Press of Salisbury. The book is soft-back with 258 pages and has many photographs and drawings. It is somewhere between A5 and A4 in size and the only drawback, in my opinion, is that some photos and drawings are a bit cramped.

ISBN is 0-946418-51-9 and is priced at £12.95. I got my copy from Platform 5 Publishing; p&p was £1.30 extra.

John Webb
