Some insight into tunnelling - I thought like most the ventilation shafts were added after, but in this case they were one of the first things to start, when they reached the required depth the navvies could start tunnelling in 2 different directions - so with 2 shafts on Risehill plus 2 tunnel mouths a total of 6 rock faces could be dug at once - incredible and fascinating...
As a lapsed mathematician I greatly admired the planning and calculations that must have gone into the design of such works - the methods used to specify how deep the shafts should be, whilst relatively simple are startlingly accurate.
