at the moment i have my usual mixture of stock!

3 test etches for the 3 types of maunsell TPO's being made up. for the first time i am going to try and represent the panelling on the sides. to my knowlage this has never been done.

5 Ratio GWR 4 wheelers nearly done. i have to do the interiors and send it off to have the transfers done (i dont do transfers!)

4 LMS arc roof bogie coaches they are just in their black undercoat which dosent show up very clearly.

And an LNER quad art

I hope the person who called me a "Trainset player" on the other thread is taking notes!

Peter as far as i am concerned she looks great don't be so hard on yourself, i have really enjoyed watching the Nelson grow. I remember sending you that box of castings & etchings & you've done wonders with it. The Craftsman range is actually rather good the smaller locos get brilliant reviews but i have never seen anyone make the Nelson kit before but she looks brilliant.

Looking forward to seeing this in the flesh.

For the Goods did you turn down the driver or did you manage to find a flangeless one from somewhere?
I want to have a go at a couple of broad gauge loco's that had flangeless drivers but without a lathe its going to be tricky.

Peter

They are nice pictures of 103 which I used to each my lunch in the cab of when I was a pupil at St Rollox. I'll get the hang of this pictures business eventually. See the pm I sent you.

I used Romford drivers on the Big Goods which you can get flangeless (or you could at one time). The bogie wheels are the clever ones though. You can't get an 8 spoke bogie wheel, but it so happens that the wheel size is the same as a wagon wheel, so I just got two axles of those and chopped the pin point ends off. Not my idea - it came from a friend in Botswana who is modelling the Highland. I have a 'Castle' similarly equipped.

Well its time for a little update.

I have been very busy with my day job this last week and have not really had time for any modelling.

Untill last night.....
I spent a couple of hours working on my 2pm.
I have had 3 attempts at these kits and on the third go I think I have finally sorted out all the problems with it.

The other model I have been working on is the 2mm Buckjumper.
I have done the beading around the cab.
I have redone the one I did a few weeks ago with some 0.5mm angle.
I am MUCH happier with it now.

I have also just recieved some decals.
Colorado and Southern for my O16.5 loco and also some silver strip for my W1. Not sure about the silver strip but I thought it was worth a try!

looking good Peter, what are you going to do with the pistons? are they also going to be painted in the same colour and left un-lined?

bring on Warley so we can line the two variants together!!!
Hello Brian.
The cylinders will be grey. I am also going to try and get some drain cocks from Hornby.

Its had a coat of gloss varnish which means it now looks like a naff piece of tinplate but alas that's the process of decals!

its been a busy morning.

First little job was to investigate the poor running of a D&RGW galloping goose

I discovered 2 problems. the first being that the whole thing only picked up of 4 tiny wheels.
I have added a wire from the rear bogie to the motor bogie so it now picks up of 6 wheels. still not great but with a DCC concepts stay alove it should be ok.

Second problem was far more serious. I noticed a slight clicking sound and decided to investigate.

Serious problem!!

I am planning an order to NWSL so I will try and get a replacement.
Oah the wonders of old brass locos!

The next job is one that I have been putting off for some time.
I wanted to get rid of a large ammount of scrap brass.
I generally give away my scrap brass to anyone who wants it but i have been lest with a couple of kilo's of scraps that are not good enough for anything.

So off i went to the scrap yard.
Got it weighed

And enjoyed my 8 quid!

Aparently he gets several model makers in there he was not supprised at being visited by another!

Time for some decals.
First job was to check that evrything was ok from last night.

I varnished a few things. the C&S 2-6-0, The W1 and a couple of stanier coaches.

No big issues. I forgot to varnish the rear of the tender and the headlight on the C&S. I may cheat and do it with a brush!
I did all the main decals.

The whole loco has lit up! it looks fantastic!

The funny thing is that now its in black, when i line it up with the horrible blue one, the blue one dosent look horrible any more!
I will still remove the artwork but I am definatly going to leave it in blue.

I also did a little work on the camelback.

I varnished the tender to hide the decals.

I also had a look at the motor.
I have decided to go for a Faulhaber 17x17.

I'm surprised that nobody does lost wax casting ones because I'd have a pair if they did...

David
More nice work Peter, that W1really is coming along nicely, I really do look forward to seeing the finished article....

Mike Dunn popped over for the evening to work on his coaches.

Note the dangerous levels of concentration!

Also... I think he is starting to get the tool bug!

Nooooooooo !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But seriously ... many thanks to Peter and his good lady for their hospitality last night

The coaches are coming on ... I didn't make too many mistakes (two window frames got pulled, but as there were about 30-35 of them, I'm not unhappy there - Peter showed me where I went wrong (I think both were on the first side I did with the resistance iron ?) & I improved after that), but I can see where I need to do better (still not very good on the laminations - too much solder
).

I think I can see the end of these two coaches, I think, so I'd better get saving for the triplet !

I'd better not mention the tools to SWMBO ... I'm in enough trouble
. The resistance iron (once I used it enough to start understanding it) is fun, but pricey ... If I could use it for more aspects, I think I'd get one, but I don't think I can justify it at present, so will stick with my basic iron. I can get the rotary bits for my Dremel (must get the company name off Peter - he did say & I forgot it
), as I can use them on other aspects too ...

Mike the 2 rotary tools you were useng were a course rubber abrasive and a 1" scotch right brush.
I get them from bellore because I tend to buy them in quantity and they are a couple of pence cheaper there.

the shape of the rubber abrasive is called a Saturn
Use a medium speed.

For the brush use the low speed on your dremel (on my dremel 395 that equates to about 5000rpm which is about right. Don't go any faster or bits will start to fly off!)

Today I got a proper stand for the millbro. It has made it even nicer to use. Pictures in the morning!

Peter
On a slightly different note, if anyone else fancies learning to solder, I am thinking about offering lessons. So drop me a pm.

Now if only those courses were going to be in the Pas-de-Calais, we could have got a much bigger turnout, what with so many of us living closer to France than London.
