at the moment i have my usual mixture of stock!

3 test etches for the 3 types of maunsell TPO's being made up. for the first time i am going to try and represent the panelling on the sides. to my knowlage this has never been done.

5 Ratio GWR 4 wheelers nearly done. i have to do the interiors and send it off to have the transfers done (i dont do transfers!)

4 LMS arc roof bogie coaches they are just in their black undercoat which dosent show up very clearly.

And an LNER quad art

I hope the person who called me a "Trainset player" on the other thread is taking notes!

Today I got a proper stand for the millbro. It has made it even nicer to use. Pictures in the morning!
Cheers for that - had a little browse last night & couldn't find anything suitable, evidently looking at the wrong sites

& I look forward to seeing the stand !

I am back off holiday and its time to write up the stuff that I did before I left but forgot to load onto here.

First up is the W1.
Decals have gone on nicely. well, the fox ones have. the stripes i got from the US were not do sucessfull and I have had to commission some waterslide transfers to replace them. but its already looking the part!

I have cut the boiler for the buckjumper

I got a new stand for my Millbro pendant drill.
Its now even quieter and handles the way a Millbro should!

Lastly is an amazing invention from my wife.
I was having problems finding a container that I could use for stripping paint off 4 Japanese coaches I bought off ebay.
She cut a hole down the side of a drinks bottle!
She even left on a flap so it is all contained and dosent fill the room with fumes!

She says you are all welcome to use this idea for a small royalty fee!

Hi Peter
That W1 is starting to looks the business.

About the Drinks Bottle - Is it plastic? - won't it disintegrate from using the paint stripper?
Yep just plastic.

It was fine. I used phoenix superstrip and phoenix metal cleaner and it was fine. I don't think it would have liked a stronger mix of the metal cleaner but I used about an egg cup full in the whole bottle and that was plenty strong enough to take the paint off.
On the opposite end of the scale the superstrip was taking far too long and was rather expensive! I will deserve that for plastic models only from now on.

its been a very quiet week on the bench. i have been on holiday to the south coast and been off to Hereford for a family doo.

But I did get the chance to take a look at a rather large project I have got tucked away.
A 3 1/4 Britannia.

About 12 years ago I got a call from my old metalwork teacher. he had moved schools and had found an old steam engine tucked away in a cupboard and wanted it shifting. I was only too pleased to oblige!

Also in the box of bits were most of the castings for a 3 1/2 LBSC titch and a pile of other castings for stationary ingines (mostly stuart)

Anyway its been tucked away in a box in storage for the last 12 years. It was great to get it out and see whats there in a new light. now I have a far greater understanding of whats there and whats missing.

It has suffered a little but its only a bit of surface rust, nothing serious.

That 'un would certainly be a beauty if you could get her running

Time for a very small update.

I have not had much time for modelling this last week but i have done a few decals on LMS coaches.

I am looking for a picture of the short LMS kitchen car (D1912) in ordinary P3 livery. I can't figure out where the decals go. I am sure there is one in the big 3 volume Jenkinson book but I don't have the volume with this coach in it!

I did spend Saturday morning at the Didcot Railway Centre. Every now and then I manage to get close enough to a loco and discover details that I had never noticed before.
On this case it was a castle class.
I had heard about how close the flanges were between the first and second set of drivers but i had never really had a chance to see it for myself.
What I hadn't considered was that this was also the location of the motion bracket! it's an amazing piece of engineering. The clearances are sooooo tight!

The other bit I want to point out is how the frames curve over the front bogie wheel. How in the name of all that's holy did they form this???

One last pic. I was at a model engineering society's premises just outside Hereford about 2 weeks ago and found this point.

Is this the most complicated piece of track in the UK? the right hand end has 5" gauge + 2 sets of 3 1/2" gauge (1 using the left hand 5" rail as the common and the other using the right 5" rail as the common) on the left you have 2 tracks, each one duel gauge. I THINK there are 3 sets of blades in there.
Amazing. I am thinking of doing a small duel gauge layout one day and I like to think i have got it sussed! But this bit had my mind boggled!

As you i've known about the tight clearances, but those pics are certainly "

Well I had a few minutes the other night and I wanted to start something fresh.

As some of you know I joined the Broad Gauge society just before christmas and I have been enjoying buying their range of kits but I dont seem to have got far with building them.

So I made a start on one of the coaches.

I have a particular way of buiilding coaches and I dont want that long flap running along the bottom of the sides so the first job was to remove the parts from the etch and tidy them up and remove that flap

Next job was to fold the flap along the top of the side. this gives rigidity and gives me soemthing to dsolder the roof to!

I took this picture to show the difference between the GWR broad gauge and standard gauge.

I used my GW rollers to roll the tumblehome

This is when I twigged that I didnt have any droplights. it turns out that they are included ont he underframe etch that I didnt buy yet!
So this is as far as this one is going to get for a while. I have spent my modelling budget for this month.

budget? whats this strange language you speak!!!!
How that pain in the backside coming along Pete is Lord Saint Vincent any closer ???

Cheers,

Alberta.
Hello Alberta

Sorry for my late reply i have only just seen your message.

It's nearly done. i need to fit the front bogie and finish the pickups and it should be done.

I am having a big push to finish off some projects and yours is one of the ones i am trying to finish. I should have the saint out the door by the end of the week. I have a GWR coach that just needs its buffers painting and interior painting then that one is done. Then yours is next.

My friends now take the mickey out of it when they come over so i really do think its about time i finish the thing.

As I said before. i really hope you are not disappointed. It's far from my greatest work.

What I could really do with is my wife to go out for a couple of days so i can do painting without her complaining about the smell and no music lessons so i can make some noise....

There are times when i miss ma bachelor days and i would work right into the night.

I will be updating this blog over the next couple of days.
Watch this space.

You've got the black 5 next to tackle hopefully that will not put up to much of a fight.

Well its been a busy few days on the bench and these pictures are intended as a quick catchup. they have been taken over the last month or so.

First up is a picture of 2 LMS coaches I have had on the bench for far too long.
These are really only for me but they may well end up on Ebay.

Next up (and continuing the theme) are another load of LMS coaches. this time made from my own etches. I am very pleased with the way they have turned out.
Much more on this later but they have been given their first coat of red last night.

Next up is a rather beautifull Gem models brass Pennsylvania 4-4-2.
It was in for a quick bit of work on its drive but this has turned into a full paint job. fairly easy to do but time consuming.

I stripped the loco down to the bare components and cleaned it in the ultrasonic lceaner. it then got a coat of Etch primer.

A new arrival is a Japanese C 58 that I got off Ebay as a "basket case"! its a rather nice loco. its a very early brass model and is a little the worse for wear but nothing some TLC wont sort out.
The motor was compleatly shot and I have got a NWSL gearbox for it and I will probably fit a Mashima motor. This is a long term project and I am in no hurry.
I have also ordered the NWSL press and various other tools to assist me with this one.

A few other thing happening too but more later.

Sorry missed a couple, I had a bit of a spray fest last night and gave the 4-4-2 its first coat of black. and also painted 4 brass japanese coaches i got off Ebay. ther were a rather odd green colour that was compleatly unprototypical. I have given them a first coat of GWR Brown which is pretty close to the colour i think they were.

I think they should be perhaps a tad darker. I will have a look at some pullman umber and SECR brown and see what they wre link.

This was the result of an evening let loose with an airbrush!
