Most of it. I do buy the odd thing now and then. But its got to gbe something special.

Thanks for the kind words guys. they are a good motivator.

I did a little more work last night and also took some more pcitures of things that have been happening these last few weeks.

First up is that LMS sleeper. I didnt know about the 3's on the doors so I put them on last night.

Next is the GWR brake third. I was hopeing to get this one out the door tomorrow night but I think it mnight need 1 more week for little details. I had forgotten the horizontal handrails down the side. and the corridor handrail. Little bits like that. But it will definatly be ready by next thursday. infact if my friend came round on Fridays instead of thursdays he could collect it this week!

Interior painted last night. just need to do the floor. I am never fussy when i paint the itneriors. life is just too short.

Next is the J69 in 2mm finescale. A pleasure to build and the chassis ran for the first time about a week ago.

This is really a test loco for another project I want to build and i used it as a guinea pig for chemical blackening chassis. this was a complete failure and needed to be overpainted. it was hopeless. i cleaned it properly and used the right chemicals and it still flaked off. very frustrating.
Thankjsfully as its a chassis, all the damage is pretty much hidden. the brush painting is not great but its behind wheels and in 2mm so it should be fine.

After a little tweaking, it runs as sweet as a nut. very pleased with it. the rather swanky maxxon motor helps! This also represents the first time I have used silicone sealant to fix the motor in place. it worked a treat.

Me-thinks you left it in the liquid too long.

Hi Peter,

I must admit that my experience only relates to etched brass couplers but I had the same problem to start with. I also tried painting it on with the same result. I now use an old soft toothbrush and scrub the blackening liquid on until it has virtually dried out. I then wash it well in clean water to neutralise the chemicals and apply a quick coat of matt varnish.

How in the name of all that's holy did they form this???

Peter

Usually, something of that nature would be achieved with heat (and plenty of it) and a seriously heavy duty press.............

White hot steel springs to mind when I see that sort of compound curvature.

Time for an update!

I have been working on the infernal Nelson!
The bogie is on! the piping is about done. the lamp irons are in place. the injectors turned to dust in my hands so I have given up on them!

I still need to fit the backhead, make a loco/tender coupling, fit hornby couplings to the tender, Hopefully, without all the work I have done so far falling apart!

I am now working hard to get this loco finished and out the door.

Next up is the beetlecrusher.
Chassis now working complete with crossheads!

I have also been working on the 2mm J69. I have now all but finished the chassis and I am pleased as punch with it!!

Runs as smooth as silk!

I have also all but finished the Saint. all the details are on now. just a few minor details. probably next thursday it will leave.

Many thanks for the update Peter, you may have noticed I have an "alleged" Arthur to deal with. Your posting will be invaluable.

Only a quick update this time.
The saint is all but done.

There has been a new arrival in the shape of a Katsumi Balboa Southern pacific GS-4
It had the old open frame motor which drew about 1.3 amps just to get it going! as my controller overloads at 1 amp I decided the motor had to go. I replaced it with a Mashima and a NWSL drive shaft. and I made a simple Torque arm out of a scrap of nickel silver I had laying around.

I decided to keep the origonal gearbox. (even though I have just bought the puller and press). Its the old square gut gear type but actually ran very nicely so I kept it.

I thought I should finish off this thread in a better fashion than that.

Well the house move has happened. and the bench has come to an end...

Thankyou for all your kind messages. I am still writing but not posting anywhere. I have a couple of irons in the fire...

The nelson was finally posted yesterday and I understand Alberta was very pleased with it (thank god!)

I have spent the last couple of months just trying to finish off a few projects that I have had on the go for far too long...

The group build wagon is also only needing decals and I will be sure to bring it along to the Warley meetup.

My new house has an entire room devoted to my bench! and a reasonably soundproof door so I can continue when the Mrs is teaching downstairs!
I now have far more quality modelling time on my hands and while I am obviously never going to get back to the levels when I was single and could sit at the bench untill the early hours... I can be allot more productive than I have been for the last couple of years.

Looking forward to meeting some of you again at Warley.

I wish I had one of those - I find the sound of Mrs. DWB practising accompaniments very distracting!

I hope you took some photos of the completed Nelson - it would be nice to see how it turned out after all the trials and tribulations you had with it.
