>Why manufacturers cannot put them on the plug that goes into the DCC socket when a decoder is not fitted beats me - it would automatically remove them when a decoder is fitted. Or is that too simple?

It may be that they don't do the job adequately when attached to the socket as you suggest. RF suppression has a lot of "black magic" about it

Hi John,

The chokes & caps have to be as close as possible to the source of interferance (in this case the comm/brushes) to work effectivly.

I believe that Benny Hill was very popular in the US but this allusion escapes me too.

Well no it doesn't and it is a good idea to remove them, especially the ones across the motor. There are three caps on 9F, two across the motor and one on the PCB along with the two chokes. If you remove the two chokes remember to solder a pair of jumper wires in their place.

Well here in Oz they are in very short supply. I got one out of the three I ordered, 92192. Seems like the importer for Bachmann here couldn't get enough so they went on a first come first got basis. It's the same with Hornby on some items like the Devon Belle train pack. I ordered both the train and coach pack at the same time and recieved the same but my cousin who ordered the train pack at the same time didn't order the coach pack till a couple of weeks later and he missed out. Mind you he got his "Evening Star" So I would recommend that you order early to avoid missing out. At least it's not like the yank stuff where it's all limited runs for the most part and you miss out as lot.

The 2 9Fs in the photos make interesting viewing, there are several differences, but the one that hit me straight in the eye was the difference in the size of the cylinders on the Hornby loco to the Bachman, and they appear to be sitting at different angles?

Comparison with photos of the actual locos (in "Riddles and the 9Fs" by Colonel H C B Rogers, for example) suggests that the older Hornby model's cylinders are inaccurate in both size and inclination, and that the Bachmann is much better in both respects.

I've just picked a 9F and it run's very well once I've ran it

Soundtraxx chip it sounds like a good idea anyway I would

As to the pictures of the old hornby and the new evening start, side by side for comparison,I would still rather have the Hornby, due to strong motor and mechanicals and also the fact that when I pick the old Horby one up the floor wont get littered with tiny detail parts that fall off,I bought the "master set" the otherday, before I have even got "Prince Paladin" out the VERY tight foam insert a part broke off, when finally out and being inspect a load more plastic bits fell off,and it comes with a bag of more even small plastic bits to add on aswell, namely the cylinder drains!!!!God I hate all this micro rubbish plastic detail!!
