Can anyone tell me why the Bachmann and Heljan Class 47 BR Blue livery models have the light grey section on their rooves?

Most of the prototype pics I've seen the rooves are blue all over. Also the old Hornby and Lima models were always blue all over.

I know diesel fumes and dirt will darken the rooves and grills etc but I don't see the light grey section on any of the pics I have.

Originally these were fibreglass translucent panels that let some light into the engine compartment. I'm not sure when but some works overhauls resulted in painted panels while others left them "as is". I'm only guessing but it probably depended on which works did the overhauls or repaints.

This didn't just apply to the 47's, I think by the mid to late 70's the panels were no longer translucent so were painted over. Certainly Crewe were turning them out with blue rooves in 1974.

Regards
