QUOTE (dcroz @ 29 Nov 2006, 10:00) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Please forgive what may seem a stupid question, but will the sound work on standard DC layouts or only on digital DCC layouts?
I remember reading somewhere that some sound-equipped locos have basic sound when running on DC, and then more advanced & controllable features on DDC layouts.

The Fleischmann Factory Fitted sound locos I have (all ESU) all have a limited sound capability when running on DC.

QUOTE (Piemanlarger @ 2 Dec 2006, 23:15) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Anyway, I was disappointed at the level of noise, it was hardly audible. I guess it sounded like a 60, though as I said it was very hard to hear.

Don't forget that people absorb sound like sponges & I imagine that it was busy with a high level of ambient noise, so I'm not at all surprised that you had diffeculty hearing the sound units.

We operate a DCC ESU sound equiped loco on our exhibition layout "Saint Laurent en Ardennes" & if it is busy you can hardly hear it (except for the brake squeal), however, during set up you can hear it on the other side of the average hall !

QUOTE (Piemanlarger @ 4 Dec 2006, 00:11) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>What concerned me was the fact i was listening from only 12 inches away. I have most of the SWD sound chips and only the SWD mk1 37 or 08 would be this quiet.

Very similar to the effects we have - are you sure that the sound was up to max ? A friend of mine has a BR 232 with sound & that is LOUD (large speakers) - you can hear that one easily with a fair amount of ambient noise.

QUOTE (neil_s_wood @ 4 Dec 2006, 23:03) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>The couplings are the big ugly Hornby standard ones. What are these conducting Roco ones? This sounds like the solution to another problem I have.

Sorry to but in ;

Roco make (or used to - there were patent issues regarding the 4-pole conductive/NEM coupling, the Roco close coupler & the roadbed for the Rocoline track during recent events - I will try & get some more in the next Roco order) a 4-pole conductive coupling, good product except that it was a pain to manually couple up a rake of more than say 3-vehicles.

Another solution would be to use the Roco close coupling conversions which give you NEM pockets & use the Veissmann 2-pole conductive couplers which are based on & interchangeable with the Fleischmann Profi Coupling.

QUOTE (neil_s_wood @ 5 Dec 2006, 07:35) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>any advise or opinion on this subject would be really good so please go ahead
You don't have item numbers by any chance do you?

Hi Neil (& anyone else interested),

The Roco coupling conversions are :

40343 for vehicles up to 170mm long.
40344 for vehicles over 170mm long.

I don't think that the 4-pole conductive coupling is available any more from Roco.

There is an alternative that we are looking into.

Anyone interested please send me a private message.
