Pity it does not explain the difference between identically described models ie 31-050 and 31-050A, and 37-801A and 37-801B, or maybe there is not any difference

Correct but that usually involves a different running number - the examples I referred to are identially numbered and would therefore be expected not have the A suffix as per reruns of a number of other models. So is some difference in finish? Maybe someone has both and could clarify.
