George,
I started with the EZ-Command, I have operated DCC locos on channels 1-9 and an unchipped loco on channel 10 but never more than three at a time, the EZ gets hot enough to make toast. There is a slight buzz from the unchipped loco and it is recommended not to leave it standing powered for too long.
I bought the NCE control set up some time ago, this is more sophisticated and can run more trains, however changing control of a consist or loco requires three separate button presses, the EZ requires just one. The NCE will not run an unchipped loco.
