Yes I had a tram layout but I used Corgi Portsmouth cars cut down and modified to the varieties common across the UK sadly a bit over scale but I had a lot of fun with them at the time.
As to track I used Hartel I even went to Wurzburg to buy it but it now is dead, Tillig is rather good as it is stainless steel but rather expensive, I will buy some more one day when the likes of Jeremy 'unt stop taxing me - a pensioner too!
This picture shows a Portsmouth car cut down to be a 'bathing van' in Leeds terms and very odd they look, the track here is railway track into which I have added granite set sheets by Metcalf, generally the tramway operator had to maintain the road 18inches beyond the outside of the track rails - a very costly requirement.
