Branchline 12 Ton Fruit van 38-181A

Bachmann Europe PLC has today confirmed that the BR 12 Ton Fruit Van in BR bauxite late livery has been correctly produced by the factory.

Some concern has been expressed that the running number B875649 has been wrongly applied and was not parrallel to the planking. The model accurately reflects the prototype where the number appeared 'squint' as depicted on the model

Apart from the Wagon No. being out of kllter, has anybody noticed what else is missing from the current batch of BR Bauxite Fitted Vans? I think I've given it away, when I mentioned they are fiited vehicles, I've just got my set of three weathered 12 ton vans from Hattons and they don't have any vacuum pipes on them!

I checked some other Bachmann vehicles that I bought recently all SR or BR(S) Vans and they all have vacuum hoses, as does the Airfix version from way back when, so why now don't they now put the vaccum hoses on?

I've looked and I can't see a place for them anyway, so it will be into the stock box to see if I have sufficient Kenline or Wills white metal hoses to detail the vans but I am really disappointed in this ommission. I thought we had virtually reached the stage where we fine scale modellers could open the box, check that the wheels were free running, unplug the 'horrible hornby type coulpling and substitute a buckeye coupling from Mr. Kaydee and off we go,
no, we still have couplings at differnet hieghts, and different lenghts, with a crank either up or down (whatever) to make them compatible, when oh when will we be able to straight couple a new loco to a coach without major surgery to one or the other.

Rant over, my hard earned is very precoius to me at the minute as I've had a period "resting between engagaments' as they say in the theatre, so when somethings turns up which should be the dogs whatsnames, I hate to think how much more have I got to fork out to get them right.

And don't get me started on the uniformity of the roof colours, many, many years ago Airfix when They introduced their 12 ton vans (very good for the time), they had three different roof shades applied at the factory, how hard was that?

The vac pipes on the BR vans would be underslung and therefore would potentially clash with the coupler. The NEM pocket is at the correct height on these vans.

Just checked my 9 examples of the Bachmann BR vans (38-160, 38-160A, 38-161, 38-170, 38-171, 38-171A and the Modelzone triple pack) - all have different roof finishes. Maybe all of a particular catalogue number have the same roof finish but then if you are going to have more than one of a particular catalogue number then you ought to be renumbering them, so running a mucky paint brush over the roof is hardly troublesome.

As an ex-pat, I have resolved that if I ever return to Blighty, the north of east and west Sussex will not be my preffered domain.

I dont understand the comment about roof colour at all.

Unless it is just out of the paint shop, I would expect roofs to weather at different rates depending on where and when they ran in trains. Unless these wagons were run in arack from point a to point be their entire life the roofs are all going to be different shades.

Hi John,

I agree with you on roof colours up to a point. Surely after the initial period of weathering from ageing of the paint finish and accumulation of atmospheric dirt, soot and smoke from locos etc, the colour would reach a point when it would get no dirtier.
Certainly on an average rake of wagons there should be very few, if any, with a clean shiny roof and certainly none with a grey plastic sheen.

The latest one from Bachmann, 38-170A, has a very light nearly white roof which contrasts sharply with the varying greys of the rest of the 38-170/171/180/181 releases. As an "early"liveried model it has quickly gone into the box of stock to use on my layout in its earlier BR period rather than the c 1966 stock box.

Outside of a possible Bachmann bashing & as I have none of those vehicles to make a comment, I cannot respond to the specific grizzle but I do get slightly cranky at people who spell company names wrongs -

The company is called & spelt - Kadee. I see many posts from within UK that will , for some unknown reason, put a 'y" into the name.

Vacumn pipes are OK to install if it is a static model but once RTR autocouplings of any breed are to be used, then pipes add problems.
Roof colours - the moment the real vans come out of the paint shop, the colours will change within hours of being exposed to the weather & for those models, a quick bit of weathering will soon create variations.
