>What do you think?
Maybe there wasn't enough room for the researchers to get on to the trains to do the count?

There were two in the SE - one on my local line. This was a train from Sutton (SW London) to Luton, on the Thameslink service in the evening rush-hour.
I stopped commuting across London just under 30 years ago, after 8 years worth - still had DMUs on the St Pancras line then. Glad I did stop - the travel costs each year covered the mortgage I took out then!

Not mentioned in the Telegraph, but Transport 2000's mascot 'Sardine Man', as recently seen on First Great Western, is planning to travel on all ten most overcrowded trains. Not sure what the reaction will be to a six-foot fish trying to squeeze onto a packed train...

Now that I would like to see - could lead to rail rage I suspect!!

Central News tonight featured a guy dressed up as a sardine on the 08:00 Coventry to B'ham new st. service.
Apparently he was staging a demonstration about overcrowding on trains.
Only problem was because of his atire he was taking up two seats!

Are you fishing for jokes there John?

Seriously though I think by doing this a point is being made about the overcrowded state of some of our rail services. It shows the need for the thousand new carriages discussed elsewhere.

Strangely enough I was reading one of my older books last night - "Not the age of the train" by Alan Morris from, I think, 1986, surprise surprise - it was a major topic then as well.
