Buying wire/pins/soldering gear etc

2196 Views 8 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  noblenoel
Any recommendation as to where I can buy the fine wire, soldering iron and plugs/pins connectors to modify some chips/harness? Searched around my local shops and nothing, the only wire I can find is for household use etc.

thanks

I think Allcomponents do fine wire and connectors.

Modelex do connectors.

Maplin do soldering irons, some connectors, and wire but it may not be fine or flexible enout as it is normally intended for PCB wiring.

Squires may do fine wire, and do soldering irons. i think they also do connectors.

Digitrains do connectors.

Use a small iron and get additional bits for it. I use an Antex C15, but make sure when you buy any additional bits that they fit the C15. I found out the hard way.

Hi Simonj,

The Antex XS25 is an excellent all round soldering Iron for railway modellers. Antex have a website here

Digitrains can supply connectors and harnesses for your reqiurements as said previously as far as i am aware carry wire fine enough for DCC installs.

Are you in the UK or abroad somewhere?

If the UK then AllComponents can supply much of what you need - I've used them on a number of occasions, although they are not necessarily the cheapest.

Quite a few of the model railway shops that advertise in the model railway press will also sell the electrical bits and pieces - ordinary model shops often don't because other modelling doesn't need the electrical bits we do.

Thanks guys, I'll look up Allcomponents and Digitrains.

While we're on the subject of getting the bits and pieces, anyone know where I can get wire for handrails ? (I'm overseas so I guess that limits me to on-line purchase.)
As to your first post Richard J at DCC Concepts (Perth Australia based) does all of what you originally asked for and I have used all of his stuff with great success.

The hand rail wire is purchased at many places however I use Alan Gibson's 0.45mm dia brass wire which he sells specifically as hand rail wire.
