The 08 shunters were introduced in 1953, and when introduced were painted black with D1xxxx numbers and no wasp stripes. They were later painted green without the striping and the numbering changed to D4xxx et seq. As far as I recall the wasp striping was introduced in the early 60's at the same tome as the yellow warning panels on mainline locos. Howeve, don't forget that these locos went frequently for many years without going anywhere near works for attention.
According to my reference books, the first 350 or so 08 class was originally numbered 13XXX without any D. They were renumbered D3XXX. D4XXX were a later batch or two which went straight to the D numbered system.
These locos were built at various locations from 1952 to 1962 to a total of 996 locos.
