There were Mk1s and Mk2A-Cs mixed together pretty well throughout the Mk2s service life - the buffets/restaurants pretty well had to be Mk21

Take an example from the mid/late 80s - the Transpennine sets (Liverpool/Manchester- Hull/Cleethorpes were coach with a Mk1 CK (the only first accommodation), a brake (generally BSO) and a Mk2 TSO at each end

QUOTE (Colombo @ 25 Nov 2007, 19:01) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>On the Midland Mainline in the 70s and 80s, I have the impression that they always martialled the first class stock at the London end of the train. This gave the posh first class passengers a flying start to get to the taxi rank and off to their meetings before the lesser mortals at the back of the train. Does anybody know if this also happened on the ECML?

I can't speak for the ECML, but back in the late 80's when the 50's were working Waterloo - Exeter services the first class accomodation was at the country end of the train. I well remember travelling there on a Network day when the powers that be downgraded the first class for second class passengers - the number of passengers who failed to spot the window notices was frightening!

QUOTE (34C @ 25 Nov 2007, 00:53) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>If you want to create a 'typical' principal express train on the East Coast I would suggest these formations for your 5 to 9:
BCK/SK/RU/FK/BSK,
BCK/SK/SO/RU/FK/BSK,
BCK/SK/SO/RU/RFO/FK/BSK,
BCK/SK/SK/SO/RU/RFO/FK/BSK,
BCK/SK/SK/SO/RU/RFO/FK/FK/BSK,
and going on to 10 or 11;
BCK/SK/SK/RMB/SO/RU/RFO/FK/FK/BSK,
BCK/SK/SK/SK/RMB/SO/RU/RFO/FK/FK/BSK.

The last is the scheduled vehicle make-up of the Elizabethan in the late BR steam era; the actual vehicle order sometimes shown with RMB and SO exchanging positions. The BCK is on the North end of the formation, as it and the adjacent SK were through to Aberdeen. If you want to go bigger, extras in the form of SK, CK and BG can be added.

Can I use the above structure for Class 50 with a mixture of Mk1 and Mk2 coaches, too? I decided to keep Blue/Grey only.

Does anybody know if the NRM version of the coaches are still available? I saw them when I visit ;last month or month before (Cant remember) but I diddnt have the money on me at the time as I treated my dad for a day out and needed to buy something on the way home as I already had the train tickets.
Think they were £30 ea?
Cheers

Absolutely spot on - they should also have a red horizontal stripe across the yellow.

Not in the photo I took.

The Mk1 FK is a corridor first - that is no brake compartment.

I'd have to check the standard reference (Parkin, Mk1 Coaches) as to whether there were MK1 BFKs - my guess is that having done BCK and BSK , as well as BG (full brake) Bachmann decided they couldn't justify yet another brake coach in the Mk1 range.

There were FKs in both Mk1 and Mk2 (non-aircon) and think Bachmann have produced both
