Ontracks, one of the UK's leading suppliers of continental models, are showcasing continental railway modelling on Sunday 25th September at their new warehouse. Model Rail Forum will be bringing you a full report.

Each year in February the OnTracks team fly to Germany to visit the world's largest Toy Fair. Whilst there they spend at least one whole day viewing the Model Railway hall. About the size of a several football pitches, filled with models from around the world. Ontracks wanted to create their own scaled down version here in Herefordshire. They have therefore approached many of their largest suppliers and invited them to display their latest models in the newly expanded warehouse and have 1,200 sq ft of Railway models for your inspection.

The event will be held on Sunday 25th September, 10:30 - 4pm, at Unit 1, Pontrilas Business Park, Pontrilas, Herefordshire, HR2 0AZ and if you are in the area or are interested in, or want to learn more about, continental modelling, then a visit is highly recommended!

In attendance will be:-

Hornby International - showcasing proposed models due for delivery from November onwards. Find your favourite items from the former Lima group - Lima, Rivarossi, Jouef. Plus Spanish items from Electroten.

Marklin - Attending with their UK Distributors will be a pair of Marklin factory layouts. In Z a 2m long town and country landscape with working level crossing entitled 'Kaiserberg'. Whilst for HO modellers 'Langwasser' is a large L shape layout featuring all the features you would expect from the German leaders in Model Railways.

Faller - There will have a range of Faller Fairground kits, scenic dioramas and a working Faller Roadway system.

Gaugemaster - New announcement - they will have on display for demonstration one of the new Prodigy Advanced DCC systems from Gaugemaster.

Noch - Producers of Scenery and model details, we will have a Noch Scenic Layout board with track and rolling stock. Also some pre built static scenic models.

Whilst the event is not a traditional Model Exhibition, Ontracks have invited two operators to attend and demonstrate how models on display around the building can be incorporated into a realistic model railway layout.

Leonardshohe - a compact German N scale layout set in approximately 1920 depicting a small scene from the Black Forest in Germany.

Kendorf - The layout is 123 cm x 50 cm and features the fictitious small German town of Kendorf somewhere in the mountains, famous for it's small chapel, now a tourist site, and the Martyr's cross on top of the cliff.

I would like to thank Fiona and Tim at Ontracks for putting on a splendid, well organised event, possibly the first of its type in the area if not the UK. I don't know how you did as my mind was preoccupied with the show but every time I looked up there seemed to be lots of visitors around.

There was certainly a lot to take in and as it was the first time I had attended an event specifically for continental modellers it surprised me how much of what was on offer could be used by British outline modellers. There really is some quality to be had among the offerings of overseas manufacturers.

The best of it is that Model Rail Forum members will be able to share in the experience offered by Fiona and Tim at Ontracks because we are preparing a full report on the day!

But when I see wagon loads made out of the original material of its 1:1 prototype, and model buildings made out of brick and timber, and fantastic scenery that can be purchased off the shelf, and action figures, and trees that are made out of wood, and working fairground rides, then one does begin to think. With a bit of imagination and a selection of continental scenery combined with Hornby Skaledale buildings, a UK outline modeller, in under half a day, could put together a layout of almost exhibition standard!

All this will be covered in the review of the event though so keep those eyes peeled.

Happy modelling
