Now that there a few Continental Modellers on the forum I thought it would be interesting to see what we all buy and what manufacturers are highly regarded.

I thought it might be good to see who we thought makes the best model overall and the best value for money. I haven't included any questions on who offers poor quality or value as our resident anti continental sabotuer would skew the result.

I may have forgotten some manufacturers so please post a note saying what you prefer if it is not on the list.

The poll is for all gauges.

So let's see what the poll shows.

Is this poll "Continental" as in "European"? If truly international, this should include many of the US outline manufacturers, of which such as Proto 2000, Overland, Broadway are up there with the best of the european.
Good morning Neil,

Thanks for the poll & votes duly cast !

Should show some interesting results !

It's purely Continental as in Continental Europe as said in the title, but there's nothing to stop anyone doing a poll on US outline or anything else for that matter. Why not go and start another poll if you have a different interest rather than tell me what I should or shouldn't start a poll about? I am very aware how good some US manufacturers are, which is why I buy some of their stuff.

It's too big a subject to do every manufacturer in the world in one poll. You can only have twenty possible answers for any question.

Cheers Brian, I'm guessing you voted LGB?

Yes, maybe they are in terms of quality, VFM & so on.
But many people collect/run european or US, not both so a poll with european/US would not really tell us much.
& in any case I don't think Neil said anything about international.

Correct !

Lemaco and HAG. Both are specialist manufacturers of Swiss outline. I don't own anything from either but I've seen their stuff on the other side of glass and it's gorgeous with prices to match.

Same here, I have only seen pictures on their websites and magazines but they look awesome.

Nope.

The poll was for people favourites so I prioritised the most popular brands.

My locos are predominantly Trix HO in Swiss SBB.

I feel the metal body is worth the extra over the plastic moulded body from other manufacturers, that said, I also have Roco SBB which fall into this category and value for money, the Roco quality is excellent.

I have , however had a real "duff " purchase in the past. a lovely Eb3/5 SBB Steamer from Trix, all metal, ran superbly, but the cab was full of motor ,,, and disguised with smoke grey plastic curtains !
This was a compromise too far, for me personally and the model was sold.
So I chose carefully, even Trix drop "clangers "

Finally, my latest recruit, is an old timer ( vintage 1988) from the "original" Rivarossi stable a small Diesel switcher, a fabulous little model, that has needed some modification for DCC running. The design of this model is incredible for its age.. Beuhler motor with flywheel fit, Nem coupling pockets, sprung buffers, the body /chassis is click fit...( yes some tabs broken with age), The body is plastic , but very highly detailed, and only 2 screws in the whole model !
Delighted with it, even though work is needed to get it to 100% DCC reliability.

Thats my small Swiss fleet

Cheers

There are links to Hag and Lemaco in the Forum links section. I have checked that they still work (they do) and found that the owner of Lemaco has sold the company and the products are now available from the new owners - Lematec. There is a link to the new owner's site from the old one.

The HAG site is in German; the Lematec site is in French.

The heading says "HO & International", and as the last time I looked the USA was not part of the UK I assumed this insignificant little country was international.

If we are being pedantic the heading of this section says "HO & International" - the sub-heading of Neils poll says "continental outline manufacturers" so where on earth does the U S of A come into this ? Most people will agree that "continental" in terms of models railways generally refers to mainland europe. If you want truely international what about the rest of the world ?

BTW - very appropriate handle !
