Continental Shelf

Over the past few years my collection of modern era locomotives with a Brenner Pass theme has grown to the point where I don't have any room to run them on my layout in the loft. It seems a shame to just leave them in boxes so I thought to display them on a shelf somewhere downstairs. And there the thought rested until "The Virus" came and I found myself working from home.

After a week at the dining room table which was uncomfortable, draughty and cold, the following weekend was spent clearing my desk in the smallest bedroom. More clearances followed and eventually it was possible to reach the single straight uninterrupted wall which would make a good location for an adjustable shelving system.

In due course some twinslot uprights and supports were put up and some 12mm plywood shelves. Most of these were filled with my collection of railway books, some modelling materials with a small amount of space for displaying locos.

Rather than just getting some bare track, I bought some Roco RocoLine ballasted tracks and finishing ends.

So far so tame. The plot thickens. Careful arrangement of the shelves left a gap at the bottom:

Hi David I wish my WFH station was like yours mine is a big white van with ladders and all manner of kit for doing my job . How ever not for much longer. The Germans seem to have so much more in the way of kits than we do as you have shown and some very pretty looking buildings to boot . Does that make us better at scratch building ? No matter I can see that although the factory is HO it looks like you could easily adapt it to a British OO layout and it would probably fit in well. looks good. Jim

I pondered long and hard over what style of city housing to choose for the city station. There are some nice kits available from Faller, Volmer and Auhagen. I was looking for something tall and thin to fit in the limited space and decided on Auhagen which turned out to be a good choice as they announced this set of five half relief houses in their new products for 2022:
Halbreliefhäuser Schmidtstraße 18/20/22/24/26

As the number of outstanding tasks dwindled, I placed a reservation on these and they arrived in stores at the start of October.

These buildings are 45mm deep and just fit in the space available behind the bridge:

The length they fill is just right as well :)
Three of the buildings have shops and as I have come to expect from Auhagen, items to go in the shop window are provided with the kit. Those red things in the shop in the centre are fire extinguishers. The style of shop front reminds me of some stores on the edge of town in Dinkelsbuhl.

The view down the line from the station platform

The houses which had been behind the bridge have been shuffled down behind the station. The depth available here is very small as the platforms extend out from the track. These buildings are a cardboard kit also from Auhagen. They are sold as TT/HO scale but you can't really tell as this photo shows.

All the major scenery items are now present.
The next big job is motorising the double slips.

The beer finally arrived ...

And for those that prefer something a little warm and spicy, an old Citroen van selling gluhwein and this year the band turned up!

A good time was had by all.

They are now looking forward to the Christmas market.

The city terminal station is visited by electrics so it needs catenary. The overall roof has no provision for attaching the catenary so I had to get creative with some 2mm square section brass and Viessmann's 4186 'Yoke with beam' fitted with 4168 short beams.
I created a slot in the end girder so that the catenary ends flush with the end of the roof. There is no way I am going to try and thread catenary through two sections of roof.

As this is a terminal station, the catenary ends are support by a 4114 catenary mast. I have decided that the tensioners will be fitted - or are imagined to be fitted to the far end of the cables. The insulators are space items from other tensioner kits I have installed elsewhere.

I now need to devise a method to support the catenary for the other half of the station.

The city station now has a city to serve.

I chose Faller's Industrial area model background as the best match to give a city centre feel.
I mounted the backscene on A1 'Graduate' mountboard which I got in Hobbycraft. I used a complete roll of Gorilla 32mm wide double sided tape and succeeded in getting one join nicely invisible. The other is not and the adhesive is strong so the part of sky you cannot see has a strange vertical tear in it :(.

Keen eye viewers will notice that the catenary is being installed at the end of the station platform.
