Dapol 08 shunter, sound decoder and stay-alive query

Good evening folks.

Looking for my first entry into the O Gauge world.

I'm interested in Dapol's 08 shunter with a sound decoder.

Currently there are some available with an ESU v4 and speaker pre-fitted.

I was wondering if ...

a) a supercapacitor could be fitted to the loco (if there is enough space and it is compatible with the ESU v4)

if the answer to the above is no, i wondered if a Zimo MX696S decoder and SC68 supercapacitor would fit in the 08.

Any help, gratefully appreciated,

Art,

Dapol's factory sound fitted Class 08s use ZIMO decoders, but the aditional cost is way more than the price of the decoder and speaker used, which are both easy to fit afterwards.

Loksound V4 will not operate the lights correctly without modifying the model's wiring (not too difficult, but why bother when the ZIMO decoder is cheaper and works properly out of the box as the model was designed around its capabilities).

Digitrains have several versions of Class 08 sound projects set up especially to match the Dapol 08 characteristics (So that owners with two or more 08s can have some slight variations in sound between them). You will not be disappointed, but remember that these are only available from Digitrains. Anything advertised elsewhere will not be the same, even on the same decoders.

You will need a ZIMO MX644D decoder, which supports stay alive caps as standard.

There's bags of room for decoder, speaker and large capacitance stay alive, although in my experience with these models you will not require a stay alive unless your track is very dirty or poorly maintained.

Best regards,

Paul

Thanks Paul.

I'd like the 08 fitting with a suitable 5-function Zimo sound decoder plus the SC68 super capacitor.

Do you know if Digitrains would do that and if so an approximate cost?

Also, I'd like the loco lightly weathered. Do you know if Digitrains offer that service?

Kind regards,

Digitrains will sell you and fit for you a ZIMO MX644D sound decoder (8 functions, so 3 spare!) with a choice of Class 08 sounds. They have a capacitor pack that has 10x more capacitance and costs half as much as the SC68.

They don't do weathering, but have a look here for some superb work. Jinty will also fit the decoder for you, with stay alive and his special speaker. I don't know about his prices, but the work is outstanding.

Hi Paul

Went with the Zimo MX644D and ZS08P sound project, a Dual Speaker in a 3D-printed enclosure (LS50x15x14) and Digitrains' own 860009 Stay-Alive.

The sound project is great - what I am less impressed with is Digitrains suggested 860009 Stay-Alive unit.

With the loco stationary, the stay-alive powers the speaker for just under a minute but with the loco moving (albeit crawling) the loco moves around 5mm before stopping.

Is this to be expected from this unit or would I get more from the Zimo 6800 Super Capacitor?

I have emailed Digitrains (originally thought I'd done this on 21st October - but hadn't) and await their reply.

UPDATE:

Now that I have fabricated my own rolling road, I can test the loco properly (previously I was limited to a rail length of less than 75cm) the loco runs for around 8-12 seconds when the power is removed at speed step 60/128.

Also received a speedy reply from Digitrains (as expected) - once I'd sent the email!
