1 - have you turned on track power to the loco with the Sprog after setting the CV ?
2 - when I usually do this, I'd do it on the layout, as the performance measured will be different depending on the track voltage from the command station.
Yes, it does "just work". Program the CV, call up the loco, set direction to forwards, press F1. (Catch loco as it shoots down track at 100mph).
You may have to adjust the motor CVs further after the auto-tune is complete. Its not a perfect method to adjust things, but usually gets something reasonable.
