There are no track plans of specific sites, but various arrangements of pointwork and track are illustrated, usually by reference to photos of actual installations at stations, junctions and goods yards. These are used to explain why railway companies laid out their track in such a way. Most often this was for operating convenience, sometimes modified to comply with Board of Trade safety requirements. The Title Page illustration, for example, is a high-level shot of the tracks leaving the platforms of Cannon Street station. Bob Essery acknowledges that it is very unlikely a modeller would attempt this (there are 12 double slips, 6 single slips 12+ points and a 3-way point visible at least!) but uses it to show how real track 'flowed' to facilitate the movement of trains, an element he feels many modellers miss out on.

John Webb
