I have been unable to find a replacement motor for a Fairburn tank, out of stock at Bachmann and Peters spares. The part no is 875-211. The Bachmann 3MT looks like it has the same motor, but is fitted with a different worm gear. I have no idea if it possible to change it. Any idea's would be greatly appreciated.

I'll check among the Bachmann diagrams I have to see if there any other matches, ideally motor and worm. (I have to say Bachmann were pretty clueless when it came to knowing what spares are interchangeable between models, for example didn't know the 3F Jinty motor would also fit the 57xx. This was about 15 years ago admittedly, perhaps they are better at this now...)

Also, I have only taken two worms off Bachmann motors, but they were both on TIGHT! Broke my old worm puller on the first one I tried, and had to buy a new one from the recently closed Eileen's Emporium.

Right, the K3 motor is the same unit, motor and worm, part no 276-005 on diagram E3227-IS001; which applies to all my K3's, catalogue number 32- 275 to -278 inclusive. Worth trying Bachmann to see if they have that one! Remember to lift the motor out from the worm end, and install a replacement brush end first...

Also checked the V1/V3, but no good, 30mm long motor.

There are probably other Bachmanii with the required motor and worm combination. The exterior motor dimensions correspond to the Mashima 1426 'flat can' ; 14mm over the flats, 26mm length over the 'can', and the worm is 5mm diameter, 10mm long. I reckon the BR std 4MT 2-6-4T, G2A and Robinson O4 as 'likely suspects'; don't have the first anymore and foolishly didn't keep a copy of the poop sheet, (because at the time Bachmann made all their poop sheets available on their website, a useful feature now discontinued) and it will now be tomorrow before I can look at the latter two, should Bachmann deny possession of K3 motor spares.

Many thanks for your efforts, Bachmann have stock of the K3 motors, so will try and order one in the morning. I have a sheet for the G2A somewhere so will check that out as well.

Fingers crossed and again thank you.

Well what do you know, having phoned Bachmann twice in the last three months and checked the web site to find the motor was not in stock. I went on the site to check for the K3 motor and on the off chance typed in Fairburn motor. Bingo up it came with a different part number. So one is now in the post. Maybe you need to be generic rather than specific.

They have just released two new versions LMS plain black 2245 and BR 42107 - lined black with British Railways on its tanks so possibly some spares turned up with them.
This is a useful general principle, and not confined to Bachmann: if you need spares and none are available; keep an eye out for a rerelease of the model going on sale, and get your order in sharpish. I don't believe there's any doubt that 'spares' are provided by breaking up any models that are received damaged, or returned by customers as faulty.
