If and when I ever get my layout finished (sometime in the 2020s at current rarte of progress) I am wondering if it woudl be possible to create a retro-future model railway. I am imagining a gleaming white monorail, sweeping through parkland studded with Corbusier-type architecture with streamlined befinned cars in the car parks and everyone wearing silver jumpsuits. One of my teachers actually had this idea when I was at primary school (he was a keen modeller) and as a class we actually started putting something together, but never actually got to the train stage (I assume nobody actually makes fictional monorail tracks and rolling stock).

Has anyone out there done something like this, or tried to model any kind of fantasy railway - either set in an imagined future or even not in this world at all? (there was quite a lot of train action on Mars in the movie Total recall I seem to, er, recall - now - a Martian layout - that's be something!"

I suppose the ultimate challenge would be Maglev ... about as far away in concept and execution as I can imagine from my archaic non-DCC efforts ....

The film "Things to Come", made in, I think, the mid-1930s, has a futuristic 'townscape' with trains running in tubes at high level between buildings and other fancies of the future.

Several years ago I came across someone who had set a railway within Tolkien's 'Middle Earth' stories - a fantasy within a fantasy!

In the Warhammer 40,000 universe there is an extensive Mag-Lev transport system. I'm currently reading a book called Mechanicum which is set around 30K and the characters use the Mag-Lev.

You could hunt around for a product that Hornby brought out in the very early 80s. I barely remember it but I did see it in a shop window in Banbury but I think I would have been 6 or 7 at most. It does pop up on ebay from time to time.

*** I did have a go at this in my late teens - 1970-something... Using Brass curtain rail and fan drive/battery power initially, followed on with some of the then "new fangled plastic" H section curtain rail with slot car copper tape each side of the lower H member.

Never did get the "wheeled" mechanism I tried to create to work well...

There's certainly a working scale model of Sydneys Monorail in the market somewhere - with sectional monorail track... Its been a while since I saw it but it didn't look at all badly done... and it had gleaming white monorail Mike!

perhaps some web searching.

Funny this is mentioned. I have some Warhammer 40k figures that I discovered when relocating and thought that maybe one of my sons might be into them later so didn't throw them out!

I have toyed with a cameo diorama style layout set in the Warhammer world and was goin to have the track under the layout with a powered bogie wheich carries an electromagnet. The electromagnet then moves a fixed magnet concealed in the "train" along some mythical rail or track.

The other way that doesn't look to bad would be some track embedded in the ground, I thought of using 0 gauge track and one of the Warhammer tanks and making something out of that.

Blimey ... seems there is more out there than I thought. I love the idea of a Middle Earth layout. With the Stagecoach franchises run by orcs! Seriously, could a 4mm scale maglev be made to work? I understand that the fundamental problem with maglevs is the switching problem ...

With the popularity of the books & films the only surprising thing is not having seen A HP exhibition layout yet !

Hi Mike

In the early 60th this running model of the Disneyland monorail was available - made by Schuco.

Watch the German site: DISNEYLAND ALWEG MONORAIL SYSTEM

You also find there informations about the E+R - Piko - Disney and Ostermann monorail models.

I've kept all my old 40K stuff. The Mag-lev is on Mars and Mars being a forge world its going to have the best tech of 40K.

Those that don't know the "fluff" of 40K theres quite a steam-punk feel the technology and much of what we know today and future has been lost to war.

If I were to make a 40K diorama, I would use something steam and european. A loco with lots of valves/cogs/oddments on the outside.

With some mods, that would be what a Chaos train would look like.

And google is my friend today

There is also the very lovely little train in that Japanese cartoon-film 'Spirited Away' ... worth it for the scenery alone.

For fantasy you could do worse than lookat the trains in the Lloyds TSB ads.

The German future was to have monorails - and red Reliant Regal vans!
An HO/OO Maglev *should* be possible as far as I can gather ... maybe make a good undergrad engineering project
