For what it's worth;
Building kits and all, I assume, are more wide-spread in HO scale. Many people say that the difference is tolerable but since this is going to be a layout with artistic values accented, I'd suggest using HO or OO exclusively.
Digital sets are way easier to use and price difference is not that much.
