Hi Stirling,
I have not tried anything like you suggest but if the turntable is to be functional only and not part of the layuot only there to turn locos around several members recently suggested a different way for me to create a turntable ..... use a lazy susan or old record deck for the base with some N guage track added and some ballast a nice smooth turntable would result as oppposed to adapting what you have already.
Just another idea for you to consider
