Recently, I acquired a kit produced by R & E Models and marketed by Brassmasters for a GCR 10 ton van to Diagram 17. Peter Tatlow, in "LNER Wagons Volume One", states that these wagons were first produced in 1910, but the notes accompanying the kit state that the first ones were not built until 1912. Can anyone tell me which (if either) of these dates is correct. Since the layout I am building is set in the autumn of 1910, I may have wasted my money buying this kit.

QUOTE (Stanier6256 @ 11 Oct 2008, 19:49) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Hmmm. What you have bought is a kit which I designed for R&E way back in the 80's. It is for Diagram 17A which is the VB version of Diagram 17. It is indeed a 1912 or later production. I think D17 may have had a slightly different body as well possibly a bit higher. I'm interested to hear that ownership of the tools has gone to Brassmasters. Makes a very nice model. If you'd like to see a picture of the trial etch built and painted (as LNER 537809) pm me. I can't be fussed with the method of putting pictures up on this forum.

Hi Alistair,

Thanks for the information. Yes, it does look like a nice kit, which was why I bought it. The instructions state that it can be made into either a Diagram 17 or a Diagram 17A. They also give the impression that the only difference between them was that one was fitted and the other was unfitted. Unfortunately, since my layout represents autumn 1910, I shall not be able to use it.

Best wishes,
Bob Ellis
