German banner signal

The above link shows a Viessmann signal, a German prototype I presume. It looks very like the banner repeater signals we have in the UK and I am wondering whether it moves in the same way as I would like to model one.

In the UK version the disc rotates on a horizontal axis to slope at about 45 degrees top left to bottom right. It is used when drivers have a poor view of a main signal - the banner repeater is placed a short distance on the approach side in a position with better visibility, it is horizontal when the main signal shows danger and inclined for any other aspect. The prototype is shown below:

Thanks for this. It confirms that the banner rotates, but the 'wrong' way for a British signal. Maybe not such a good idea after all...
Hi Edwin,

What you hae shown is a shunting signal.

From what I gather you want a distant signal.

Cheers

John

Good link thanks poliss - German signaling is complicated & there is some very useful information there.useful
it would appear that the Viessmann banner-type signal you show, does work in a similar fashion the the UK prototype banner repeater........although the meaning of these signals is totally different!!

see http://www.sh1.org/eisenbahn/snsh.htm

as john woodall stated, it appears to be a shunting signal......

Yes, that was my conclusion too. The closest UK equivalent is probably the red and white disc. However, according to the diagram in your link the German signal rotates so the black stripe slopes bottom left to top right when showing a proceed aspect. A British banner repeater slopes top left to bottom right as shown in the photo linked from my original post*. I guess this is consistent with the orientation of German semaphores, which in turn stems from running on the right. Napoleon has a lot to answer for!

*Some or all banners on the Western Region probably work(ed) the same as the German one, as that region used lower quadrant semaphores, but my layout is set elsewhere.

the Prussians might have something to say about that?
