2 of the Trix Lilliput AL1 Electric (Class 81) AS NEW are on sale on Ebay at the moment.

They started at £250.00 and are now at £460.00.

Are they really that rare ???

The answer is yes.

British Trix collectors are small in number (200 or so according to the ones I have met with), know each other, and tend to hang onto things. Very few mint British Trix items come to the market these days but when they do 200 British Trix collectors pounce!

A near mint to mint one realised £350 + 20% premium (£420 total paid by bidder) at Vectis in 2006. A fair to good one realised £90. As always condition is everything. Wo betide the eBay seller if they are telling porkies about the condition!

Happy modelling
Gary

PS just had a sneek peek at the items and they are nice. I've got some Triang coaches in electric blue that will go very nicely with these little numbers. Maybe I should contact the buyer afterwards.

PPS for a £500 item you would have thought that the seller could have afforded the fees for supersize pictures!

Wow! £890 and £645.99 respectivly. I guess you have to be quite well heeled to be a British outline Trix collector.
As an aside to this, are these locos so collectible because they are simply rare or are they well made and highly detailed models? If they are nicely detailed wouldn't it make sense for whoever owns the moulds to make a few? Not in a Hornby Lord of the Isles kind of way (I'm not knocking those who will buy and enjoy LotI) but to fill the void of British OHLE locomotives. Then again with the lack of British OHLE equipment would there be enough demand for these locos?
I saw one of these a few weeks ago at an exhibition good condition in a fair box - for about £160.00, and I thought that was expensive! I was obviously wrong.
