Great track underlay

This is a general note about a topic that MMD bought up. I agree with the point he made; sound and vibration absorbtion is the issue for underlay or track-bed.

My base board is two inch MDF. On top of this I have a layer of inch and a half white foam. This does a lot of the work; bolted to the walls around the room

On top of this I have the following: Large three foor square green foam, 8mm - ish thick.

Selitflex or Selitac (Brandname) It cuts easily with sissors and you simply cut your trackbed in strips.

It is described as foam or depron:

It is designed for floors that require an anti- vibration underlay. Radio control flyers in Germany are already on to it, as it is very easy to use, very light and loves white glue.

This is the problem for you guys in the Uk though; I can only find German sites and I get mine in Denmark.

The packs I buy can be seen on www.powerpreise.de (German)

If you cannot get it in the UK we may need to sort out an import business!!

Regards to all,

Pros & Cons...
Any underlay will help reduce noise levels.

Any track / ballast that's glued down on top of the underlay takes it all virtually back to a zero noise reduction

So what's the best option

It really a matter of personal choice... Use an underlay that deadens sound without applying glued ballast or put up with the rumble and have realistic looking ballasted track!

Of course there are always the Noch and Gaugemaster pre-ballasted underlay - a really effective way to achieve ballasted track with only a fraction of the hassle! Both HO and N are catered for and both grey and brown versions are available.

Depron is widely used by the electric flyers in the UK as well. It is not widely available except at specialist model shops. Mail order is a real problem as a standard sheet is 1800x750mm, costs about £3 & cannot be economically posted. If you want it posted one source I know is:

Dam Chris,

No punters for my E.com venture; and a rival supplier in the uk already!!

Thats me dead in the water mate. Is that the shortest business venture in history or shall i continue to trade at a loss like Amazon.com for the next five years?

p.s height - got that wrong - should read 4mm high. Did i mention the grooves on one side; smooth on the other can be used for retaining walls at the same price?

(p.s. I always assumed you would ballast in the normal manner over it. It is not at all like Hornby type 'foam' underlay!!!)

Also DIY store packs of this green stuff are huge; tenner for thirty square feet-ish; even in tax high DK.

If anyone is interested I my even tell you all who I -got- borrowed- stole- the idea from last year!

You can buy very large packs of Depron from UK underfloor heating suppliers but not from DIY sheds. One pack will last a lifetime for everything you can think of!Unfortunately small packs from model shops will always be more expensive but often more convenient.

In the UK we get 2mm 3mm 4mm & 6mm normally white or charcoal colour and (fortunately for fliers) not ribbed. Cyano (with a little pre dampening) sticks it whilst most contact adhesives dissolve it. You can get foam friendly Cyano but I have rarely found it necessary.

I am moving into an aeromodelling topic but if anyone is interested I will continue.
