Although I am currently modelling the Southern Region, my first love was always the West Region. My question is this. I know that panniers were usually black under BR but does anyone know whether they were ever plain green with late crest under BR?

In a word NO!
Never heard of a panier tank in BR Green.
The only ones that MIGHT have been would have been the Hawksworth 94xx class and I can't recall ever seeing one "in the flesh" or in photographs.

There were some in lined out black though and those were few and far between.

A photo of a 94XX class in my elderly (Winter 1961/2) ABC Combined volume shows it in plain black apparently without a BR crest of any sort - or was it obscured by dirt? In other photos of PTs all seem to be plain black. Oddly immediately above the photo of the 94XX is one of a 14XX shown in what I presume is lined green.

A quick look through several other books on the GWR/BR(WR) all show PTs in plain black.
It is possible that PTs in preservation may have been given a livery which they never had under BR, of course.

John Webb

Thanks Frank. I note your forum name. Wouldn't it be great if someone produced a RTR Dukedog? There is talk of City of Truro so I suppose the chassis would be similar. We can but hope.

Slightly off topic, but don't forget a number, 6 I think, passed to LT and were painted maroon.

Hello Noggins Friend, I have just checked my RCTS book relative to panniers and 6430 was in plain green in 1957 and 6431 in fully lined green in 1st january 1958. Mixed traffic black was applied to 5409 at Wolverhampton in august 1949. The relative crests are not stated.

You are going to have to do some detailed digging - I have a b/w photo of 6413 in front carrying what looks like fully lined BR green with a late crest and apolished safety valve bonnet! 6437 also appears to be carrying this livery in some of Ben Ashworth's photos in the Forest of Dean - were auto fitted examples painted this way? Was Wolverhampton responsible?

Huh-hum, 64xx were a passenger push-pull class, most in green?

Reading the above posts it seems it could have been possible. But, going back to my original reply, I have not seen a panier in BR green livery 16xx class or otherwise. I can't say that I've seen pictures of one in Green in BR days either.
That doesn't mean to say there weren't any!

There were loads of 14xx locos in lined BR green, as was usual with passenger class engines going through the works after 1957.
Nogin's Friend, Yes it would be nice to see a RTR Dukedog 90xx class, like you say the City class chassis would be similar except for the the driving wheels diameter . The Dukedogs having smaller wheels.
I have thought about building one of the Brassmasters kits but never got around to it!

I've just watched an old video of a push pull train with rail tour around Shrewsbury 6437 is seen in lined out GWR green. The other Pannier is in traditional black.
Just shows there's always one odd one.

AFAIK the 64xx should all have been green after 1956 - quite rightly they were a passenger class: I remember them in Wales and the West - I'm almost sure they were lined as well.
