Hi Graham

You got that Bachmann crab for a bargain. I recently paid £25 for a Lima one! I'm going to repaint it in early crest BR black.

Hi Dave
I contacted him about 2 weeks ago. He has changed his medicine and was busy painting so that might be a reason.

Dave,

Are these the older Hornby type, of the type that are now in the railroad range? If so, then here's a tip - don't repaint but stain! The basic plastic is quite a pale orangy colour. Careful application of some 'pine' wood stain (I use Ronseal 'Colron' Antique Pine Stain), will give the coach a much more realistic effect. Be sparing though, and try to paint 'with' the (fake) grain. I'd post a pic of some of mine, but it'd take about a week to dig them out!

I've not tried this on any of the new, highly detailed Hornby teak coaches, but it also works on the old Grafar teak coaches.

Cheers

Hi,
Refering to painting the old hornby teak coaches to a more realistic finish, a friend of mine here in Australia has painted them using Cedar stain. I would use the dry brush method. I have sold all but one of the old coaches and have 4 of the new and 2 kit built ones which I have painted. SO must remember to buy a small tim of cedar stain and try it.

Iused a stain once but it started to melt the plastic body
it was a spirit base so a water base should be ok

Hi Graham,

Hope you are well, I've not been about for ages and although my love of all things trains remains its taken a bit of a back step over the past year since I returned from my tour. Anyway at the weekend I went to a local model railway exhibition and re-kindled my passion. After leaving I went shopping and decided to buy Railway modeller something I've not done for such a long time, I was so pleased when I got back and noticed Hannem gracing the pages, it's a fantastic piece.. Felt a bit like fate.

I hope all is well with you and hope to hear from you soon.

Dave,

I've just located the coaches I stained a few years back. I'll take a couple of pics and post, so you can see if it's the effect you're going for before you try.

Dare I ask if the coaches you want to paint are the ones that were silver?

Cheers

Morning Folks -- I am around again -- been away with the "bag" Lady , now in Devon and will get a little modelling done - although to be frank my day to day state of health and thus my motivation (and ability) to do things varies quite a lot.
Will cover "teak" paint later - I use paint , stains will probably react chemically with the plastic ? Nice to hear from you Willy , hang on to the railway you will need it when you get older !
Just finished a LMS 6 Wheel Fish Van - looks ok and runs well - pics to follow

Aha! Great to have Hannem back to escape into.

Eventually I managed to get October's RM and it was like seeing the work written up in print of a good friend.
But I realised how I much prefer watching your brilliantly authentic looking (and sounding) Hannem videos. They somehow convey far more of the atmosphere of those old NW smokey cities than the crisp magazine pics.
Your video shots along the MPD retaining wall always remind me of the days I'd escape from tedious structures lectures in L'pool to watch the processions of the LMS and GW big stuff running out through the red sandstone cuttings from Chester General

Then of course there is all the detail info about how you paint your models which I go back to again and again.

So a big welcome back Graham!

Morning All , I am still alive , I know I am , my eldest daughter said that she had just seen me !!

Had a few novel experiences since I last reported to the Forum , non very pleasant , all involving Hospitals and Doctors and the like . I am now convalessing in the small "charming" Hospital in Exmouth . (38 beds ) The aim is to build up stregnth over the next couple of weeks (?) before going back home And Playing Trains

So , no railway to report on , just a "health" check and notification that I am alive and kicking .

Thanks or you msges etc , sorry not to have responded sooner , Today is the first time I have used a pooter in 4 weeks

Regards

Graham
