Welcome aboard. Went to Locomotion Shildon a couple of months ago, and saw the Shildon built HDA privately bought for exhibition. If I remember the information correctly, they went wherever replacements were required for HAA's worn out in MGR service; thus on all the MGR circuits.

I have no detailed knowledge but my understanding is 'mixed' with examples of all the various builds of wagons for MGR working.

There's an old thread on this site in which a railwayman, 'Bear 1923' has posted, and that will give you an idea of how these wagons were mixed up.

HAAs built in the late 60s were brown livery until around 1980ish. They then got painted into rail freight red. In 1982 ish a new batch of MGRs were made with special air brake systems on them. These were called HDAs. In the early to mid 90s some MGR wagons became different HFAs I think with side canopies . Anyway this the the basic differences. They became a different code when EWS took them over. I’m sure other will help out here
