Thought I'd let you know I've just come back from a great day out at the Spa Valley railway, Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Up and down the line twice with a great fish and chip supper all for £10!!! First time I've been to this railway, very impressed! It was their 10th anniversary spring gala so the shed was open and you could have a good look round. We were pulled by an E4 visiting from the Bluebell line, a Beattie well tank from the NRM york and the lines own 3F Jinty, all in BR black. I got to see an old favourite of mine Terrier "Sutton" which used to on the Kent & East Sussex when I was a lad. It was in pieces but one day hopefully.....
I would recommend this railway to anyone.
Also in the area are the fabulous K&ESR (two Terrier's), Bluebell line (also two Terriers), Romney Hythe and Dymchurch (my favourite's Hurricane by the way) and the Sittingbourne and Kemsley light railway. I haven't been to Sittingbourne for a long time but have visited the others this year and all are in great shape and well worth a visit if you are in the garden of England.
You might have guessed by I like Terrier loco's, I'm trying to think of an excuse for one being on a 1930's set LMS layout but I'll keep working on that one!

Mike, you and me both! I worked on Sutton during her first major overhaul (1972 - 1975?) and I love Terriers - no wonder the class was awarded a Gold Medal at the Paris exhibition! Having a Terrier on an LMS layout is simple - have a Colonel Stephens feeder, either a light railway or something like the Edge Hill light railway (industrial)....

That'll be malachite green then. I believe the "ch" is pronounced hard as in chord, and not soft as some mischievous persons might prefer.

Er Mr Bulleid was behind malachite, I was thinking of the 1920s olive green.

OK, what about the Lavender Line near Uckfield next time you are in the area? We're only tiny I know but if you're lucky someone may be able to show you round our shed and the food at Isfield is superb!

Personally I was more fascinated with the red "sporty" number. Have you any further info on it?

Christmas it is often said, is a time of peace and goodwill to all, but sadly not for the Wisbech & March Bramley Line Group it seems. The Group had applied for a grant to get the lease and pay the legal fees, but sadly it got denied this week and all because a couple of critics felt it isn't wanted, or supported as much as it truly is. However, the Group are going to prove them wrong and go out even harder after the start of the new year and get that money raised as much and as often as they can. They WILL prove to these people that they can do it without them. One critic was said to have even asked 'What is a railway?'

Claims were made that they have no plans, but they have never even heard of the word communication, NOR have they attended any meetings with the Group, so how do they know what they have, or haven't got, unless of course they have been listening to the rumours and then believing them?

Despite this little setback, they do have offers of help coming in from other sources and I would Love to see their faces when the Group have that lease in their hands. The few who deny it will be a success, will very soon expect to ride on the first train along there, but then they can deny them the opportunity to do so.

Whilst I am aware, as most on here are, that the world out there is full of self-serving sheep's backsides...perhaps the Wisbech lot need to put out a bit more PR to make the non-cognoscenti aware of what is happening.....? [see, I CAN be polite!]

''Perception' is the new truth, eh?

Let's face it, teh London Olympics rubbish would not have arrived if the pR hadn't been working overtime?

and I wish it hadn't, because I don't fancy my meagre taxes being wasted on something that will have zero effect on my economy........yet will occupy so much of my personal media contact time.

Regrettably I have to agree with Alastair on the subject of Wisbech and March group. If it had not been for trainman I don't think I would ever have heard of the project.

(by the way I am fully aware of the problems of getting leases and land purchase - I've got the T-shirt)

Thank you for alerting me to this Gents. As from January, we are going to step up our informing people of our project with new ideas and an updated Business Plan despite some locals claiming we never had one. I found this hard to believe, because they have never asked the Group WHAT they have. As they say, Watch this space.

Thank you again and A Very Happy New Year to Everybody on this forum.

QUOTE (alastairq @ 28 Dec 2007, 10:30) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>''Instant Thomas the Tank'' thoughts spring to mind??

''Toby's'' stamping ground?

[Mock up a diesel shunter??]

Not as daft as some might think as there are plenty of class 03 and 04 shunters out there, and they would only need a steel skirt round the wheels.

Now if someone were to make a replica J70, which could easily be diesel powered, then we're up and running.

I read somewhere recently that the owners of the "Thomas" trademarks are considering a big increase in the license fees that heritage railways pay for having "Thomas & Friends" theme days. If that's true, a valuable source of funds could be soon be out of the reach of smaller groups such as Wisbech.

Unfortunately the licence holders of TtTE are not allowing events that do not make a certain amount of money. The tightening up of the requirements for holding an event all stem from an unfortunate incident on the Mid-Hants Railway during a Thomas event, resulting in an individual being prosecuted this year.

There are various new requirements such as CRB checks on all people running the railway during a Thomas event, the need for the Fat Controller to go on a training course or have a pre-trained one hired for the event etc. etc.

Several railway are not holding these events during 2008, but are holding a family fun day in its place.

Regards,

Dan
