QUOTE (leicester thumper @ 21 Jul 2009, 21:30) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>i dare say already mentioned, try the Great Central Railway sometimes you can get on the train and not pay at all (trust me i have seen it happen! i havent done it yet!)

Let's hope not many people do it then - otherwise it (the railway) may not be there in the future tut tut !

I wish i had..... lol

I take it that you are joking when you wrote "I wish I had" as what you are saying here is, in law, "I wish I had stolen from the Great Central Railway". What you would be thieveing would be travel and, so far as the National Conditions of Carriage apply, which a version of them does on the preserved lines, could cost you a hefty fine (£1,000) or even imprisonment.
I know, as it is part of my job to catch such fare evaders on First Great Western routes out of Paddington.

Well I was at my very favourite school working today. Why my favourite? Because it has the Swanage Railway running alongside the playing field that I was working on! Well I can say it was a lovely sunny day and the little Ivatt 2-6-0 that`s currently visiting looks a really good little locomotive! It was even trying to do a classic Bullied start from Corfe Castle station with a fair bit of slippage when it started. Highlight though has to be those little ex-Par Harbour tank locos from the Bodmin and Wrenford Railway. They`re currently doing shuttles along the stretch currently used only for visiting engine access to the railway (Motala to Norden P&R)
Guess where I`ll be tomorrow!

Well what fun those two little industrial tanks were! I think we had 7 trips between Norden and Motala, caused three lineside fires which were very quickly and efficiently extinguished by the crews! All adds to the fun! Brilliant weather and a great afternoon!

QUOTE (John H-T @ 2 Jan 2009, 23:28) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Sadly I think the link between Heritage Railways will end completly in the next year or two. The Thomas experience will be at The Thomas Theme Parks.

Personally, I wouldn't be too bothered if "Thomas" disappeared completely from preserved railways; you make your way halfway across the country to photograph a particular engine - you get there and it's got this silly face on it!

Yes, I enjoyed reading Thomas books but I never thought he was real.

I fully accept that it might bring in much needed money for the lines but I don't remember the RHDR or Welsh narrow gauge lines doing it. As has been pointed out, there are various other options such as the war, freight, diesel days etc.

Well I went to STEAM in Swindon today. I`ll admit it was probably not the best of days to go with the additional Lego event happening at the same time, but I have to admit I was not well pleased with what I got for my £10 admission fee! I feel there isn`t anywhere near enough information about each locomotive, coach, wagon, etc. shown by the exhibit. I would have liked to have seen diagrams showing what made made/repaired/whatever. I appreciate they have to accomodate members of the public who have a much lesser appreciation of the more intricate details of the railways but I still think they sell the more dedicated railway enthusiast way too short!

Mid Hants 'The Watercress Line'

First the bad news - Steam Gala was last weekend

Now the great news - 3 Day Diesel Gala is 26-28th April !

Classes 20, 33, 37 (finally going to see one for first time in decades - yipee!), 47 and even a Deltic ( Alycidon ) are due to be attending ( plus the thumper unit and 50027 'Lion' ).

Apart from the obvious anticipation of seeing preserved 20,37,47 running, I am really looking forward to seeing a bloody huge deltic trundling through the Hampshire countryside
