Click here to see the 2009 Hornby Catalogue.

Some old models resurface and some late models from last year are due to finally arrive. Fewer models overall than in previous years, but some nice surprises in the 2009 preview. Nothing much new on the DCC controller, decoder and accessory front, but some nice sound equipped locos due. Please take a look at the 2009 range preview and tell us what you think.

Embargo-busting seems to be normal for some - it seems always the same guys. We'll have to see next year if is really worth it to go to the trouble we do to publish this list. I'll be chatting to Hornby about it to see if we can make the experience better next year. I'll let you know what they have to say about it all.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all Model Rail Forum members and visitors

I presume it will be the same as the program printed in model rail which came through the letterbox this morning ?

Not very inspiring to me but i'm sure there is plenty there for other modellers

My copy of Model Rail also arrived this morning and I must say I am genuinly puzzled not to say disapointed with the headlines reported.

I will say no more until I have read the full listing tomorrow, but I don't feel it worth loosing sleep over to read it tonight!

Happy Christmas and hopefully better news form Bachmann in the New Year!
It is rather annoying that some people cannot keep quiet for a few days as the Hornby releases are a bit of fun each year. It's a bit like finding presents before the big day. as for Bachmann they will promise and deliver when everyone has forgotten about their offerings. Maybe Hornby should not have press releases until after their release on their website.

In a break with tradition (if you didn't already know it) hornby are making their announcement as of midnight tonight. So no spoilt secrets and it avoids the problem of early subscription copies as encountered last year when (also in a break with tradition) it was the paper media letting the cat out of the bag rather than the electronic one.

It's a very recent break. As of 19th November, the announcement date was 1st January. Check out the Announcements page of the Hornby website and the November / December release PDF if you want proof.

My guess is that with Model Rail sub copies dropping onto door mats today / Saturday containing full coverage, someone realised there was no point in holding the embargo for everyone else. It's a bit tough on magazines with a publishing date almost two weeks into the new year but a date is always going to be wrong for someone. I guess they'll make the best of it and will be able to reflect initial online reaction to the news.

Meanwhile back to the mince pies and roll on midnight GMT.

Last year they were caught out by somewhat overefficient distributors of model rail and by royal mail seemingly being a bit quiet, this year some subscribers have again got their copies today (don't know if I'm one of them until I interrogate the wife). Perhaps next year they'll go 24 hours earlier.
Anyway three minutes to go.

So the new steam locos are Castles and Clans?

The new Pullmans look nice.

David
A few nice items in there I will have to get.

The Sound Black five will be one of them. I'll have to get a clan too, it will have to be clan McLeod having lived on Harris for a while.

I wonder what livery will be on that new Hitachi job?

One of my mate spent a fortune on a brass Pullman observation coach. He will be gutted to see a regular one come out now.

Some nice Skaledale buildings.

some nice bits again, shame no new GW coaches but hey, cant have it all.

I will put my name down for the Observation coach, and a Clan (There can only be one!)

Merry Christmas one and all

Looking forward to the new Castle. I wonder if it will have the detail variations between the 4073 Castles and the 5013 Castles...

Thanks Doug you've done us proud again

So this year it'll be a Clan for me, straight into the shop for renumbering Clan Mackenzie and some new Pullmans.
The Observation Car is a nice touch but not on my shopping list, I'm supprised that there are no GWR coaches unless Hornby are going to do an "08" on us again also supprised there is no Arthur/Water Cart pairing.
Other than that I think the 2009 range fits the times in which we live and am greatful to be getting at least one new loco that I want.

Happy Christmas to you all

Yes, it is possible they'll pull surprises on us later in the year. As Simon K has said in the past, if they are not confident they can get the models out in reasonable time, they won't announce them, but if they find during the year that they can speed up the release, we get a nice surprise!

I must say I was surprised that there are more Munsell variations to come, with the four compartment brake - pleasantly surprised, I should add! Also, the High Window Maunsells in Bulleid Malachite green with Sunshine lettering, plus some low window variants, plus the Carmine and Cream ones, so my Southern "flavoured" layout will get even more crowded as the year progresses.

I thought I had finished buying Pullmans for the time being but Hornby have now changed that with the twelve-wheelers and the bar car to come.

Looks like I'll be staying poor again this coming year.

Well done Doug on laying everything out in such a presentable fashion, and well done Hornby on an interesting and well mixed series of new releases and new livery issues.

Hornby are to be congatulated on producing the quitessential GWR locomotive - a (retooled) Castle Class. The old version is now a little long in the tooth and I willl order several. Hopefully the king will also receive similar treatment in due couse!

I like the look of the Pullman Observation car (entirely unexpected!) and the 6 wheel Pullmans and the new Maunsell coaches. Hopefully, with he new Castle some new GWR coaches will follow - and what about a 42/72xx 2-8-0 tank engine and some electrically operated signals, widely predicted by some.

Whilst there is room for improvement, a credible result In the curent economic climate!

Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year to one and all!

Best regards

Brian Patterson
