Hornby Patriots and Bachmann Royal Scots

I've been tossing up whether to get Hornby's Patriot and Bachmann's Royal Scot classes . I've heard that these earlier models aren't all that good. Anybody got one or other that can comment on them or should I buy kit loco?

The Patriot has a tender drive. Fit a Bachmann split frame chassis fitted into the body.
I also modified the tender and fited a sound only decoder there runs OK.
Your alternative is the comet chassis.

G'day Double, How anout the Tower Models kit or the Wills fine cast kit. Good, no good? or does nobody build kits anymore?

I have a three tender drive Brittania's and a 9F that I fitted Lenz 1035 decoders to. They run okay although the gear noise is noticable at speed. I've been thinking of modifiying a "Brit" to take a NWSL gearbox and an 1833 Mashima when I can get the time!

The latest patriot has an 8 pin decoder plug in the tender though where you could fit the decoder i wouldn't like to say, the pic i saw also had a lot of excessively long wire in there just waiting to snag on a gear.
