Not necessarily. There is no technical reason why you can't use overhead pick-up with DCC so long as you know what you are doing.

Unfortunately, the number of modellers aiming at that level of sophistication is probably perceived as being too low to make the investment in such fine metalwork, and all that goes with it, financially viable. You only have to look at the abomination that adorned the Hornby 86 in its early days (possibly still does?) to see how low such details come on their list of priorities.
