I have just bought some Hornby R8673 platform lamps to use on my 1950s layout. They look all right except they are shorter than I would have expected. They are 33mm to the top of the finial and 24mm to the bottom of the lamp casing itself which scales to six feet. Were they really this short or is the model not accurate.

Thank you

Hi Robert,
Not sure about these particular lamps, but it does seem short.
I have some platform lamps from microminiatures.co.uk (period gas lantern type) marked as HO/OO and they are 41mm to the top and about 32mm to the base of the lamp, so in OO scale that makes them just over 3m high and just over 2.4M to the base of the lamp.
Regards

At St Albans South signal box we have two versions of Midland Railway gas lamps - two street lights and one platform lamp - the latter is about 18 inches shorter than the street light version. To the base of the platform light lantern is about 7ft. Not too clear why there were two versions; possibly the street light version was higher to cover a greater area?
