Hornby Railroad range in the shops!

The Hornby Railroad range has appeared in the shops and appears to be an instant hit with many items already selling out at stockists!

With a loco and 3 wagons available for £26.50 and a brand new Virgin Class 47 for £34.50 then it is not surprising really!

Well that's encouraging news. It will mean in the future it will be expanded. There's a couple of items that are tempting me actually!

Very good news.

I am looking forward to detaining some wagons, and finally being able to afford a propper rake of wagons instead of just 1 or 2!

This range will, I think, breathe some life back into the post Thomas modelling of the younger generation. I also think it will have uses with people like myself who will possibly buy for the chassis for other purposes and ditch the body.

Regards
Peter:

You may want to take a look at the Pullmans. They're essentially accurate and the type is more appropriate for ECML Pullman trains than the current Hornby Pullmans . I think Tony Wright covers upgrades for them in one of the BRM DVDs

The TTAs can produce a good result with work and some A1 etches but I suspect they're a bit late for your tastes
I was actually thinking of the tanks. i think they look good when they are toned down a bit snd msbye with some etched steps and walkway i think they might look quite respectable.

Somewhere in a box i have a set of etched overlays to do a set of the pullmans that are now in the hobby range. i never did anything with them because at the time the pullmans were quite expensive for what they were.

I wonder if i could get close to the hornby finish!???

Allders in East Croyden still has a few bits and pieces left for those in / around the area who are still yet to find it for sale anywhere.
According to traders I have been speaking to the Railroad range is proving a big hit with customers. Hornby must be doing very well with this range as the big wholesaler used by a lot of local traders is very short of stock right now.

As it is a winner for Hornby expect to see a massive expansion of this range in 2008 in the way that Skaledale rapidly expanded in the year following its launch. Ultimately most of the former Lima rolling stock range may well reappear. Not so sure about the loco range though as the chassii all need upgrading to meet latest EEC regs (different motors, etc) and it may not be worthwhile doing this.

I bought a set of 3 EWS wagons in the Railroad range last Thursday, it cost £9 for 3 and I spent about an hour weathering them and £1.75 on replacing all the wheels with metal ones.

Do you know what? they look really damn good!

I've also got one of the big EWS hoppers (pre-weathered) and they don't look at ALL out of place hooked up with this.

An absolute bargain, Hornby have really hit a good compromise with these. Sure they aren't ultra detailed but, like I said, with the plastic wheels replaced they really do look like they should have cost 3 or 4 times more than they do.

Finally, eBay prices in the shops, and reachable for everyone!

I have ordered a load of the tankers, but my order was postponed because of high demand!!!! i am thinking about doing a detailing kit for them.

You should keep good ideas to yourself Peter!

A kit comprising a Railroad wagon, upgraded wheels, transfers, detailing parts and instructions could do very well!

What are your bets for 2008 then Gary?
i think we will get a load more (very usefull) wagons and some crappy mk1's. but i have no idea about loco's.

Whatever coaches and wagons Bachmann have in their Blue Riband range if Hornby have the tooling Hornby will introduce similar in their Railroad range!

Locos more problematic as ex Lima stuff needs work to update the running gear. Far easier to introduce Hornby range deletions and older models like the Jinty and Class 47 already in the RR range.

That would be my thinking anyway if anybody wants to work out the likely candidates for 2008.

Bachmann have a small archive of older tooling to draw on if they wanted to enter this market. For the time being it is one area that Hornby have all to themselves. Railroad is to the noughties what Playcraft was to the 60's. It could end up on the shelves in Woolies and Poundstretcher and elsewhere. Places where model train stuff currently is not on offer.

We have to remember that Railroad already has a very wide shelf space exposure in the UK.

If Railroad gets more into the hobby by way of introduction then everybody wins anyway!

Hadnt thought about getting it into different shops.

Ok. for what its worth i think it will be an A4. using the old tooling it has the same chassis and mech as the Scotsman already in the RR range. as i said in my last post i think there will be some crappy mk1's, perhaps the wagons that lima first brought out with the 59. there was a 4 wheel hopper and a bogie hopper. but even then it will require new wheels. i dont know if Hornby would concider investing in even a small wheel tool for the continental axle length and i dont think they would put the metal wheels in something thats going to be sold to little kids.

I am not so sure about this very wide shelf space exposure. my experiences have been that very little is in the shops because there is so much of it on backorder.

As far as the TTA tanks are concerned, there is effectively a detailing kit on the market already as A1 Models have offered a replacement etched walkway/ladder in 2 versions for a number of years - supplies of A1 stuff can be erratic but think rthese items are still out there. On the couple I've done, underframe detailing mainly involved carving away bits that should not really be there. These days even rewheeling should be unnecessary
I don't think the mk1s will appear in the railroad range as Hornby are still doing relatively OK knocking them out @ £20 in the main range. They will not have some in the main range and some in Railroad range. Much more likely could be the appearance of the Original Staniers (circa 1977) or Gresleys maybe in Maroon or Bloud /Custard.

On locos , what about Hymek,Class 37. Now well past their best and replaced with better models from other manufacturers. Similarly class 58 could appear as a spoiling tactic against the forthcoming Heljan one.

On Steam- B12 perhaps , Original fowler tank in red?

I wonder if that would divert too much of Bachmann's attention from managing the production slots for their existing range of models. The Bachmann UK link to production seems a lot more tenuous than Hornby's. If that's wrong, do correct me!

David
Heh! Heh! It has occured to me that some of Bachmann's older archived tooling may offer better models than some of the current Hornby offerings!

Scratch that idea! If I recall part of a conversation with Dennis Lovett, Bachmann policy is to upgrade models as old tooling wears out so they may indeed not have any archived tooling. It may all be consigned to Hong Kong harbour.

I think Hornby will have this segment to themselves for a while; Bachmann have followed on from Mainline in appealing more to the serious end of the market while Hornby have straddled the fence as it were. I would have thought Hornby will consider those lines that have a duplicate/replaced model. There should be quite a range to pick from!
