Hi all.
I enclose, without comment, a genuine e-mail received from a friend today, Dec 1st;

I made a phone call to Hornby today. Bad news I'm afraid - they will
not be producing the Schools or the T9 until next year as they have
had a lot of trouble in China. Presumably they are on the high seas
at this moment, but will not be making landfall till after Christmas.
Looks like they've shot themselves in the foot, or maybe even in the
chest, as regards Christmas. I never thought I'd say this, but thank
God for Bachmann! So maybe 2010 for the Standard Class 4...... or
will that turn up before everything else?

What do you all think of that?

I am not surprised. When there was talk of 23 December delivery a few weeks back it was pretty obvious that the Xmas/NY break would prevent any real distribution until into 2009. Let's hope Hornby are working on the DCC sound versions to make amends! Now who is being over-optimistic!

Hello David, no, I have no evidence to back this up, but I have no doubt that the phone call was made, there would be no point in making it up. The friend in question is, like me and many others, waiting patiently for both of these locos to be released because we want to buy them.
If you do want to check the veracity of this, I would respectfully suggest you phone Hornby yourself, and if you get a different answer I'd be most interested to hear it.

The loco's im sure will be with us some time in early 2009. With the current situation in Asia I think Hornby have done a pretty good job getting them out this close to their original release date. Also I'm sure that if it was possible, Hornby would have done all they could to get them in the shops by Christmas.

At least the T9 review in Model Rail was extremely positive!

I have a T9 on order and am looking forward to it , but its not really worth worrying when it precisely arrives .They are making it ,that should be enough .Who would have dreamed a few years ago that a good T9 would arrive on the shelves one day .Get real you guys ,a month here ,a year there ,its not important .Are you going to cancel it and buy something similar from someone else?.Are you going to wait for the Bachmann version ?Maybe Dapol will chip in under the radar and knock one out quickly .Lets just let Hornby get on with it and admire it, or not, when it arrives.

Kader, Bachmann's parent company, have bought the factory that makes Hornby's models. Delays for both firms have been down to the factory struggling to keep up with orders, but with new money behind them they hope to get up to speed again.

But you are right, who cares if there is a delay. It just prolongs the excitement!

I have to say i agree with Black 5 Man here because after all said and done most of us are used to waiting well past delivery dates for Bachmann models in the past!!.
As i am also a modeller of military Aircraft i have had the 1/24th scale Mosquito on back order for months now and that was due out for this Christmas initially but i have found out from the Airfix stand at the IPMS at Telford it wont be out until about July 2009!. But Hey it will come out so i will get one so i believe in just being patient.
There my thoughts anyway.

Kind regards everyone.

Someone with common sence at last! Well said Martin. We are spoilt these days, almost too much to buy. If a product is late it just gives more time to set aside the money!

people on the hornby forum have started receiving their T9s now. I saw a brief mention of a discount code for the hornby website but it looks like that post was removed.

I went into "Kernow Model Rail" in Camborne Cornwall yesterday and bought the Black T9 (30724 without Tender Crest) off the shelf, cost £69.99. They are out there keep looking.

The T9s and Schools should be in shops now, but I am aware (as Black 5 Man mentioned) that Hornby has had difficulties with production in China during 2008. However, this situation should now be resolved following the purchase of Sanda Kan (the factory which Hornby uses in China) by Kader Holdings (Bachmann's parent company).

The full production T9 and Schools models both arrived in our office well before Christmas and our samples are distributed at the same time as the shops receive theirs. A full review of the Schools is in the February issue by the way, which is on sale on Friday.

With regard to the Hornby BR Standard Four, this model is now due to be released early in 2009 because, as Simon Kohler has said, Hornby wanted to get all the details right before committing to production - the way it should be!

Hope this helps.

Thank you Mike.

I am waiting for the NRM T9. I would rather receive the model working properly and as good as possible late than have it rushed out. Getting it right often takes time, getting it wrong can be catastrophic. See the N Gauge Manor produced by Ixion!

Well thats commendable. I just thought that the T9 and Schools had more sales potential, given that the Bachmann version of the 4MT is already released. To be honest given the state of manufacturing in China just now, I'm surprised that Hornby haven't just ditched the 4MT and replaced it in the manufacturing slot queue with one of the 2009 releases that haven't been announced yet . I appreciate they've already sunk the R&D costs but they might make more money that way. The 4MT looks a nice model but its the duplication of an equally nice Bachmann one - its got to affect sales.
